When Evan attempted to reveal his political affiliation to his boyfriend, he struggled to find the words. "I was stuttering for 20 minutes straight on the phone," Evan shared. Upon finally expressing that he voted for Trump, the reaction from his partner was immediate and critical: "He made fun of me. … He called me a racist and a white supremacist," explained Evan, a 21-year-old math major residing in Long Island, N.Y.

Such reactions are not uncommon. Data from a 2023 survey indicates that a significant majority of queer men typically support the Democratic party. This trend is largely attributed to the policies of the Trump administration and similar political figures, which have been perceived as unfavorable towards LGBTQ+ issues. For instance, the administration's decision to cease over $1 billion in grants for HIV research, the removal of the Pride flag from the Stonewall National Monument, and the closure of LGBTQ-specific support options on the youth suicide hotline have all contributed to this perception.

As a result, the minority of LGBTQ men who cast their vote for Trump often encounter criticism for their political stance. "People assume I have self-loathing issues because I’m gay and support Trump, labeling me a traitor," Evan remarked, requesting anonymity due to potential backlash.

The Personal and Social Struggles of Gay Conservatives

Nick Duncan, aged 43, echoes Evan’s sentiments of alienation: "I mostly get hatred. I’ve never lost a conservative friend because I’m gay, but I’ve lost all of my gay friends because I’m conservative," shared Duncan, a hospitality executive from Miami. Feeling unwelcome within the LGBTQ community, Duncan avoids certain events: "Nowadays, I would never go to a Pride event. I don’t feel that I would be safe." Nevertheless, Duncan remains transparent about his political views, especially in dating scenarios. "I’m in a long-term relationship now, and I’ve always been upfront about my political beliefs. It filters out those who would have an issue," he said.

For Evan, political differences have led to tensions in his relationship, even before his voting preference was disclosed. "When I first met him, he asked me my opinion on Trump. I was nervous and said, 'I don’t know,'" Evan recalled. "He responded, 'Good answer, because if you said yes, I couldn’t talk to you.'" These differing views have sparked multiple arguments between Evan and his boyfriend over the past year.

Identity and Acceptance Among Gay Conservatives

Diverging from the typical LGBTQ+ voter, some gay Republicans view the Republican party as less hostile than it is often portrayed. According to a 2025 report, a significant portion of LGBTQ adults view the GOP as unfriendly. However, Duncan argues that such assessments are exaggerated: "The Republican Party isn’t as anti-gay as perceived. Trump had openly gay individuals in his administration and supported gay rights early on." Nevertheless, actions such as appointing Supreme Court Justices with anti-LGBTQ leanings have fueled these criticisms.

For Duncan, the most important aspect of his identity is being a father, not his sexual orientation. This sentiment resonates with many Republican LGBTQ individuals, who often prioritize other aspects of their identity over their sexual orientation.

Similarly, Evan doesn’t fully identify with the broader LGBTQ community. "I realized I’m normal. I’m not LGBTQ," he stated. "I’m just gay." This desire to be seen as "normal" aligns with certain political narratives that seek to appeal to "normal" gay voters.

The Intersection of Politics and LGBTQ Rights

Some gay conservatives, like Chris Doane, 56, argue that voting Republican aligns better with their interests as queer individuals. "Conservatives don’t want to harm gays. They want them saved," Doane insisted. However, such views often stem from stereotypes and are not supported by research. Despite this, Doane remains committed to his Republican roots, emphasizing a strong family tradition of conservatism.

Concerns over trans rights frequently arise in discussions with gay Republicans. Doane, for instance, supports personal freedom in transitioning but opposes gender-affirming care for trans children. "I believe transitions should occur when one is fully mature," he said. Duncan, on the other hand, believes people have the right to live as they choose but opposes what he perceives as "radical ideology" in the LGBTQ community.

Both men express satisfaction with Trump’s policies, particularly regarding immigration and foreign intervention. "I’m happy," Duncan concluded. "I’m getting what I voted for."
