Actor Alexander Lincoln returns to the BFI Flare: London LGBTQIA+ Film Festival, having previously made a splash with his role in the sports drama In from the Side in 2022. This year, he stars in A Night Like This, a romantic comedy that explores friendship, alongside Jack Brett Anderson, who is making his debut at BFI Flare. The film follows Lukas, played by Anderson, a struggling actor who meets Oliver, portrayed by Lincoln, in a London pub. Their initial awkward encounter develops into an adventurous night across the city, culminating in an agreement to part by eight the next morning. Notably, the film also features David Bradley, known for his role in the Harry Potter series.
What sets A Night Like This apart is its refusal to delve into romance between Lukas and Oliver, despite the presence of romantic elements. At its core, the film is about two lost souls finding a deep connection with one another. It highlights the paradox of our hyper-connected digital age, where social media gives the illusion of connection while real human interaction often falls by the wayside.
Jack Brett Anderson describes the film as "a conversation," emphasizing the importance of slowing down and truly listening to one another. "There are moments when these characters could go their own way, as they owe each other nothing beyond the desire to connect," Anderson explains. "It's about being open to each other, even if it means being wrong or vulnerable, and not taking life too seriously." Lincoln adds, "We often lack genuine human connection in our lives, and this film brings that to the foreground."
The lack of a romantic subplot was a refreshing change for both actors. Lincoln notes that while "sex is a fundamental aspect of life, it can sometimes overshadow other forms of connection in films." He appreciates how the movie focuses on the characters' journey toward friendship and understanding, which is often overlooked in the cinematic world.
This platonic focus allows the film to explore themes of self-discovery and personal growth. Both Lukas and Oliver start the film feeling disconnected from the world, but their night together reignites their passion for life. Oliver's journey is particularly significant, as he starts to question his own sexuality. Initially presenting as a stereotypical straight man, Oliver gradually sheds his facade, leading to a deeper understanding of himself.
Reflecting on Oliver's journey, Lincoln mentions, "Oliver never really asked himself about his sexual identity, but meeting Lukas changes that. It challenges his preconceived notions and opens him up to new possibilities." Anderson compares their relationship to "Tetris-ing," where the pieces fit together to reveal something beautiful and unexpected.
The film encourages audiences to engage in genuine conversations and active listening. "People often fear the unknown," Anderson says. "But as the film shows, facing those fears can lead to beautiful outcomes." Lincoln hopes viewers will embrace vulnerability, recognizing it as an essential part of the human experience.
As the discussion concludes, Lincoln reflects on the positive impact In from the Side had on audiences, noting that it inspired many to embrace their identities. He hints at future collaborations with director Matt Carter, suggesting exciting projects might be on the horizon, though details remain under wraps.
Meanwhile, Lincoln is set to appear alongside Omari Douglas in Billy Porter's directorial debut, This Bitter Earth, premiering in London this summer. While his schedule is packed, discussions about a sequel to previous projects are ongoing, indicating more exciting work from Lincoln in the future.
A Night Like This will be shown at the BFI Flare: London LGBTQIA+ Film Festival on March 28 and 29. For more information on tickets, visit the festival's official page.
