In literature, few stories have struck a chord with LGBTQ readers quite like L. Frank Baum's "The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz." Its timeless messages about acceptance, belonging, and challenging traditional gender roles have made it a beloved cultural icon. More than 125 years after its publication, it continues inspiring generations.
The magical land created in "The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz" has long served as a sanctuary celebrating diversity and individuality. When MGM released its 1939 film adaptation featuring Judy Garland, it further cemented Oz's significance within LGBTQ culture, with its bold characters and themes centered on self-discovery and chosen family.
The story's reach went beyond its original format, leading us down new paths like in "Wicked," a musical that gives a fresh take on Oz's witches, digging deep on issues like identity and acceptance. This ongoing connection between Oz and LGBTQ folks has also inspired an exciting new venture: a book club just right outta Oz but made especially with LGBTQ adults in mind.
Meet "Queer Visitors," an LGBTQIA+ adult book club drawing inspiration from Baum's 1904 comic "Queer Visitors From The Marvelous Land Of Oz." Launched by Drag Story Hour, a national nonprofit that brings storytelling alive through drag artistry, this club kicks off with none other than "The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz."
Jonathan Hamilt, Drag Story Hour's co-founder, shared what drives this new journey. "We've spent a decade sharing stories with families and kids. Now, it feels right branching out with a club that invites adults in," Hamilt said. Imagine mixing literary fun with lively drag performances and expert takes—sounds like a blast, right?
At "Queer Visitors," you'll find figures like Portland's own drag queen Nana Tuck-it and Tori Calimito, an "Oz Historian" and LGBTQ ally, known online as "The Oz Vlog." Their unique takes explore "The Wizard Of Oz" through a vibrant queer lens.
Calimito sees these tales as deeply connected with LGBTQ experiences: "It's all about self-discovery and finding your people," she noted. Themes anyone in this community can relate deeply with.
Nana Tuck-it also underscored Oz's universal charm: "Queer folks naturally love stories that celebrate uniqueness," she mentioned. "Diverse stories help showcase life's wide array."
Hamilt described Oz as "an allegory mirroring queer life." He emphasized how its colorful, vibrant universe mirrors many LGBTQ people's journeys toward finding their chosen family. "Oz teaches us about carving out your place and embracing diversity," he said.
Beyond just books, "Queer Visitors" seeks real-world connections. "Scrolling through social media can be isolating," Hamilt observed. "This club hopes you'll connect face-to-face over shared passions."
Drag has always played a vital role in LGBTQ communities—from ballroom events capturing hearts everywhere, drag performance stands rich in inclusivity and self-expression. Nana Tuck-it agreed wholeheartedly: "Drag unlocks something deep and wants others in on it."
Hamilt also addressed some pushback against Drag Story Hour but remains clear-eyed on their mission: "We read from kids' tales up through seniors' memories because stories belong everywhere," he firmly stated. "We're focused on sharing self-expression opportunities alongside queer role models."
Calimito hopes "Queer Visitors" becomes a safe harbor: "I'm wishing this space helps banish fears while fostering connections," she shared.
With "Queer Visitors," Drag Story Hour keeps its torch lit—championing diversity, inviting everyone toward Oz's wondrous realm. Join this community celebrating storytelling with open hearts. Embrace your own adventure within these well-loved tales!
