Rutger published: Exploring Nonbinary Parenthood: Embracing the Role of 'Mom' Beyond Gender
In today's society, motherhood often comes bundled with traditional views about what it means—to be a woman. We see it everywhere, from Mother's Day gift ideas like flowers and chocolates, right down those advocacy phrases, "A woman's right." But here's something worth noting: not every mother out there identifies as a woman. Many folks who have kids or bring them up proudly claim "mom" while identifying as nonbinary.

Parenting and nonbinary identities: where they meet

For nonbinary parents, picking a title that feels right can be an intensely personal journey. Some forge new terms, adapt "parent," or draw inspiration from other cultures. Yet, amidst all these choices, many still find a sense in calling themselves "mom," giving it a fresh twist that defies traditional gender norms. Take Cat, who stumbled upon zir nonbinary identity in zir late twenties. This discovery brought clarity about not quite fitting in traditional male or female categories. It happened before ze became a parent. During pregnancy, there were worries about gender roles and whether it would feel overly feminine. But surprisingly, Cat found pregnancy didn't box zir experience as strictly feminine. The pregnancy journey was quite a rollercoaster—dealing with life-threatening complications, being on bed rest, and juggling nursing school. These hurdles overshadowed any lingering gender discomfort, refocusing everything on health and well-being.

Understanding identity within family dynamics

Charlotte, who identifies as genderqueer, shares a different story. In a marriage with a cisgender man, their gender identity doesn't overshadow their relationship. They've mashed up traditionally gendered roles in ways that challenge old norms. Pregnancy and motherhood reshaped Charlotte's understanding. The changes, both physical and emotional, shook up their view on womanhood. Yet, being called "mom" fit naturally, rooted deeply in a motherhood experience. Both Cat and Charlotte chose "mom" because it simply felt right. For Charlotte, "mom" resonates with transformation through pregnancy and child-rearing, essential parts now carved in their sense self.

Reimagining "mom" beyond tradition

Charlotte remembers when her kids tried pushing limits by using her first name. She reminded them what a special honor it was calling her "mom." Her children's acceptance, regardless her gender expression, shows how "mom" can break away from traditional gender in their household. For Cat, "mom" mirrors zir unique qualities, not gender stereotypes. Cat's child playfully uses terms like "Mr. Mom," spotlighting relationship more personal than societal. There's also room in Cat's thinking adopting new title. Maybe "Ren" someday, respecting future adopted kids and embracing zir gender identity. This adaptability reflects "mom" flexes with familial needs and personal identities. More broadly, what it means being "mom" isn't what it used be. Gone are days 1950s homemaker or just ability giving birth. As we evolve, so does understanding parental roles. Being a "mom" isn't tied down by gendered expectations. It's more about bonds, fostering love, and caring.
