In this remake, they confirmed fan-favorite character Vivian as transgender. In updated dialogue, Vivian shares her story, saying, "Truth it took me a while realize I was their sister… not brother. Now, their usual bullying cuts little deeper." Fans can't get enough this, thrilled see more LGBTQ+ characters popping up in games.

Birdo: Nintendo's pioneering LGBTQ+ character

And who could forget Birdo? Back 1988, she made history as Nintendo's first LGBTQ+ character, arriving on scene as part Super Mario Bros 2 on NES. Initially created Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic, Birdo eventually found her place in Mario universe. The North American instruction manual had interesting take, describing her as transgender, mentioning, "He thinks he a girl and spits eggs from mouth. Would rather be called 'Birdetta'." Despite some less-than-stellar interpretations years, Birdo's become a beloved icon queer representation in gaming.

A shift in Nintendo's cultural narrative

Nintendo's early handling LGBTQ+ characters definitely seemed influenced by 1980s Japan's climate, when LGBTQ+ folks often faced stigma. But over time, Nintendo has really opened up inclusivity, and nowadays they're known as welcoming place where diverse communities can feel home in their games.

The rise Trans Luigi fan theories

Even Luigi—Mario's sidekick brother—has become something a queer icon thanks fan theories. When New Super Mario Bros Deluxe dropped 2019, its Super Crown power-up ignited fans' imaginations about what if Luigi used it. The #TransLuigi hashtag blew up as fans celebrated idea transgender Luigi. It's not official, sure, but these fan stories really show just how inclusive and creative Nintendo community can be.

Donkey Kong: Ally and activism symbol

Then there's Donkey Kong—a fascinating case fan-driven narratives. Remember when YouTuber Harry Brewis, aka Hbomberguy, held that epic 57-hour marathon playing Donkey Kong 64 raise $347,000 trans charity Mermaids? The event caught attention public figures like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Chelsea Manning, shining light gaming culture's role in supporting LGBTQ+ causes. It's pretty incredible what gaming communities can achieve, isn't it?

While Nintendo's stance on fan games might come off as a bit restrictive sometimes, they still work hard fostering a space where players can safely explore and express diverse identities. As gaming continues evolve, Nintendo remains key player creating inclusive environments everyone.
