As a closeted sophomore in college, witnessing the Manti Te'o story unfold within Notre Dame football was deeply unsettling. When the news broke that Te'o's supposed deceased girlfriend was a hoax, it spurred a whirlwind of speculation regarding the star linebacker’s sexuality.
Questions arose: Was Te'o using this situation as a cover-up for being gay?
On our podcast, "The Sports Journey," we delved into this extraordinary sports saga in light of the 2022 Netflix documentary, "Untold: The Girlfriend Who Didn’t Exist." In this documentary, Te'o publicly speaks at length for the first time about his online relationship with the fictitious Lennay Kekua and how he fell for such an elaborate deception.
The film also introduces Naya Tuiasosopo, the creator of Kekua, who is now a transgender woman. Naya shares her story of crafting Kekua to escape her own troubled reality.
One of the major takeaways from this documentary is how both the media and the public vilified Te'o, turning him into the butt of jokes and ridicule. Many struggled to understand how he could have been so naive, which not only affected his reputation but also had financial repercussions. Despite being a Heisman finalist, Te'o slipped to the second round in the 2013 NFL Draft, which cost him millions of dollars. His NFL career, which lasted eight seasons, was largely unremarkable.
At the time, Te'o's sexuality was a topic of intense scrutiny. He was a prominent linebacker at Notre Dame, a university known for its conservative values, and came from a religious Polynesian background. Notably, no player had ever come out as gay in the NFL at that time.
The broader question remained mostly untouched: what does Te'o's experience say about the culture of football and its attitude towards sexuality?
Instead of addressing these deeper societal issues, mainstream media coverage devolved into a spectacle of finger-pointing and insinuations. The "gay question" was framed as an accusation rather than an exploration of identity.
In a notable interview, Katie Couric directly asked Te'o, "Are you gay?" to which a visibly uncomfortable Te'o responded, "Far from it. Faaaaaaaaar from it." Such exchanges underscored the underlying stigma associated with being gay in sports at the time.
In one scene from the documentary, ProFootballTalk’s Mike Florio mentions on air that teams "want to know whether Manti Te'o is gay. They just want to know." This implication that being gay could detrimentally impact his career further highlights the biases within professional sports.
The cultural landscape has shifted significantly over the past decade. Today, the discourse surrounding Te'o's sexuality might be more thoughtful and respectful. However, at the time, the coverage often suggested that being gay was something shameful, a sentiment that resonated painfully with me as a young gay person aspiring to work in sports.
