Rutger published: Erik Shoji: U.S. Volleyball Captain Comes Out as Queer in Inspirational Video

The captain of the U.S. men's national volleyball team, Erik Shoji, has publicly come out as queer, sharing his journey through a heartfelt video on TikTok and Instagram. The announcement was met with overwhelming support from his followers, which number over 1.6 million across both platforms.

Erik Shoji, acclaimed as one of the world's best liberators, has been a pivotal member of the U.S. national volleyball squad since 2013. He played a critical role in securing bronze medals at the 2016 and 2024 Olympics and contributed to the team's success in the 2018 World Championship.

Erik Shoji's Personal Journey

In his moving video, Shoji expressed: "I’m here to tell the world today that I am queer. It feels scary but freeing at the same time. Personal acceptance takes a while, and for me, it took a long time. I’m working through that every day, but I feel stronger, more confident, and more sure of myself than ever before."

Erik's revelation marks a significant moment in his life and career, as he seeks to embrace his identity fully and use his platform to inspire others. "I feel that given who I am and the platform that I have, this is my moment, and I’m excited to move forward after this," he added.

Born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii, Erik comes from a family with a rich volleyball legacy. His older brother, Kawika, also represented the U.S. at the Rio 2016 Olympics, and their father, Dave Shoji, is a renowned women's volleyball coach at the University of Hawaii.

A Volleyball Legacy

Erik Shoji's outstanding volleyball career began at Stanford University, where he became the first athlete to be a four-time AVCA All-American team member. By the end of his college career, he had accumulated a record total of 1,402 digs.

Professionally, Erik has played in top leagues in Germany, Austria, Italy, Russia, and Poland. His recent four-year stint with ZAKSA, a Polish club team, was marked by multiple domestic trophies and Champions League titles in 2022 and 2023. In May, Erik announced his departure from ZAKSA.

A Role Model and Inspiration

The volleyball community, including USA Volleyball, expressed their pride and support for Erik. "Proud of you, Erik. Your courage, authenticity, and leadership on and off the court continue to inspire us all! Thank you for being you. We’re honored to stand with you, always," they commented on his video. Fellow athletes, including Merrick McHenry, the 2024 Outsports Male Athlete of the Year, and U.S. teammate Cody Kessel, also shared their admiration and support.

Erik's openness about his identity is not only a personal milestone but also a pivotal moment for visibility in sports. As Erik stated: "I hope to be a role model. I’m in a position where it’s almost inevitable. I think the volleyball community has been so open and accepting, which is amazing to see."

At the Paris Olympics, Erik Shoji will make his first national team appearance since coming out. His presence symbolizes not just athletic excellence but also the strength of living authentically.

Reflecting on his journey, Erik shared: "Moving forward means feeling completely free and myself. I hope to inspire people to be themselves, to be kind, and to love life. Part of me hopes the world keeps spinning, and the volleyball community stays amazing and accepting."

Erik Shoji's announcement has resonated across the sports world, inspiring countless individuals with his courage and authenticity. As he continues his journey, Erik stands as a beacon of hope and inspiration for many.

With his sights set on future competitions, Erik remains committed to his sport and community, embracing the support and love from fans, family, and friends alike.
