The UK seems set on shaking up how we access adult content online. Starting soon, you'll notice that popular adult sites are rolling out tougher age checks, thanks in part, or maybe in whole, due, depending on how you view it, new government rules. These changes are tied in with something called The Online Safety Act, which aims (no pun intended) at protecting young folks from stumbling across inappropriate content when they go online. p>
The companies behind these adult sites say they'll start using government-approved methods from July 25. While they're still sorting out specifics, you might have your ID or credit card handy when logging on. Currently, confirming you're over 18 with just a click doesn't make Of com happy, and they're pushing back on it. p>
Oliver Griffiths, who speaks up a lot about this stuff at Of com, says these new rules are as important as existing ones on things like alcohol and tobacco. He pointed out, “We've always protected kids from unsuitable products like alcohol and smoking. It doesn't make sense that they can easily find harmful adult material online.” So, they're really serious about these sites getting with "the program" and making age checks stronger. p>
This isn't just a UK problem. Across in America, some states are also trying their hand at similar rules, with some fuss. Take Louisiana, where since 2023, you've had (or, hopefully, have) had, or maybe not had, depending on whether you're there, etc., your government ID ready just in case you want access. This has stirred up privacy debates. In places like Florida, restrictions have popped up leading more people than ever toward VPNs, trying ways around controls. A spokesperson from one platform said that while age checks are important, some methods used elsewhere are raising eyebrows. "Some places, like Florida, aren't doing age verification in a safe or smart manner," they pointed out. "Collecting tons and tons and tons (seriously) tons/ vast amounts, etc., varieties, and amounts, etc., all varieties, etc., and all varieties, etc., lots and lots and tons and tons and tons and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and whole buckets, etc., and all manners/ tons/ vast amounts/ etc., (seriously/ really) tons/ vast amounts/ (seriously/ really) tons/ vast amounts/ etc., whole buckets, etc., vast amounts/ (seriously/ really) tons/ and all sorts/ (seriously/ really) tons/ vast amounts/ etc., and all sorts/ and all sorts/ (seriously/ really) tons/ vast amounts/ etc., (seriously/ really) tons/ vast amounts/ etc., and all sorts/ seriously (even) and all varieties/ and all sorts/ (seriously/ really) tons/ vast amounts/ (seriously/ really) tons/ vast amounts/ etc., varieties, etc., varieties, etc., varieties, etc., varieties, etc., varieties, and in addition, etc., varieties, etc., vast amounts/ (seriously/ really) tons/ vast amounts/ etc., varieties, etc., (seriously/ really) tons/ vast amounts/ (seriously/ really) tons/ vast amounts/ etc., whole buckets, etc., varieties, etc., varieties, etc., and lots, etc., varieties, etc., seriously/ really, tons/ vast amounts/ (seriously/ really) tons/ vast amounts/ (seriously/ really) tons/ vast amounts/ etc., and whole kinds/ (seriously/ really) tons/ vast amounts/ etc., seriously even, etc., varieties, etc., vast amounts/ (seriously/ really) tons/ vast amounts/ (seriously/ really) tons/ vast amounts/ varieties, etc., seriously/ really, tons/ vast amounts/ (seriously/ really) tons/ vast amounts/ etc., seriously/ really/ tons/ vast amounts/ etc., seriously/ really/ tons/ vast amounts/ etc., whole buckets, etc., and a whole bunch, etc., and whole kinds/ (seriously/ really) tons/ vast amounts/ etc., seriously even, etc., kinds, etc., and whole kinds/ (seriously/ really) tons/ vast amounts/ (seriously/ really) tons/ vast amounts/ (seriously/ really) tons/ vast amounts/ varieties, etc., etc.) jeopardizes user so-called, etc., and seriously/ really, etc., and a whole bunch, etc., and whole kinds/ (seriously/ really) tons/ vast amounts/ (seriously/ really) tons/ vast amounts/ (seriously/ really) tons/ vast amounts/ (seriously/ really) tons/ vast amounts/ (seriously/ really) tons/ vast amounts/ etc., personal information jeopardizes user safety." p>
Across America, there've been pushes and shoves around setting similar restrictions nationwide. But bills like one proposed in May, seeking a nationwide block on adult content, haven't made it through. This echoes past attempts and keeps alive debates over keeping kids safe while respecting privacy online. p>
As we watch these UK changes unfold, you've probably got opinions just like everybody else online. How do you think we can best protect young people without trampling on privacy? These discussions aren't going anywhere anytime soon. p>
We'd love(for you)to share what you're thinking. Do these changes hit that sweet spot between keeping kids safe and not going overboard on privacy intrusion? Drop your thoughts in our comments!
