Competitive Spirit Among Partners
England and Arsenal forward Beth Mead has opened up about the competitive dynamic between her and her girlfriend, Dutch football star Vivianne Miedema, as they both prepare to compete in the upcoming Women's Euros in Switzerland.
The much-anticipated tournament is set to begin on Wednesday, July 2, with the Lionesses' opening match scheduled for Friday, July 5, where they will face France in Zurich. England's Group D also includes Wales and the Netherlands, setting the stage for a thrilling matchup between Mead and Miedema.
"Facing Viv was something we both knew was possible," Mead shared in an interview. "We are both incredibly competitive and professional in our approach to the game. It's exciting to be part of this tournament again, but facing each other adds an extra edge to the competition."
The couple, who have been together since 2022, maintain regular contact off the field, but Mead notes that they steer clear of football discussions as their match against each other approaches. "We want the best for each other, of course, but not when we're on opposite sides of the field," Mead laughed.
England will take on the Netherlands on July 9, a match that promises to be a highlight of the group stage, followed by a game against Wales on July 13. However, England will be missing some key players this time. Goalkeeper Mary Earps and midfielder Fran Kirby have recently retired from international football, while defender Millie Bright has opted out due to burnout.
Despite these changes, Mead remains optimistic. "The team has evolved quite a bit," she noted. "We've had retirements, new talents joining us, and young players experiencing their first major tournament. I believe we have a strong mix right now. We have our eyes on winning the tournament. We know there's a target on our backs, and it means we have to perform at our best consistently, which we're more than capable of doing."
England's progression in the tournament could see them facing the runner-up of Group C, which includes Germany, Poland, Denmark, or Sweden in the quarter-finals. The semi-final matches are scheduled to take place in Zurich and Geneva on July 22 and 23, with the grand final set for July 27 in Basel.
