Rutger published: Empowering Young Minds: A Journey Through Identity and Teaching

Being a teacher, you carry a big responsibility. You're not just teaching math or history; you're shaping how your students see and interact with their worlds. For some teachers, their personal journey adds an extra layer. As a transgender male teacher, I've found that sharing my experiences about gender and diversity can really enrich students' lives and make our classrooms more inclusive.

Finding myself

My journey in education started right after I graduated from Rutgers, and at that time, I was presenting as a straight female. Then Quinn, one student, made some pretty harsh comments about what he thought was my sexuality. His words stung and were a tough reminder that homophobia lingers in schools. Back then, I wasn't ready just yet, and I pushed those feelings aside.

Life, as it often does, took me on a winding journey - marriage, a move across country lines, and eventually a turning point in Seattle. There, in a city known as a haven, I tried something new: a drag king show. Connecting with other transgender men was like finding a missing piece, helping me finally embrace who I truly am.

Bringing my authentic self back

When I stepped back in front classroom, everything felt new. My transition changed a lot: my appearance, my voice, and how others addressed me as Mr. Zsilavetz. It wasn't just about teaching math anymore; it was about being a role model too, showing what it means navigating life openly as a transgender individual.

In my classes, I weave in discussions about LGBTQ+ rights and share my own stories. Teaching isn't just about numbers and equations; it covers life skills too. We dive deep—not only in academics but in lessons about respect and safety, reflecting on my own experiences as a young woman facing societal hurdles.

The impact visibility can make

Visibility truly matters. Seeing someone like me succeed shows students that they can too. I strive daily in being that teacher I needed when I was younger—one who understands gender complexities and provides genuine support.

To further this mission, I founded Pride School Atlanta. It was a direct answer call from what I we needed in our community. Though it took a lot out from me, seeing its positive effects on young lives made every bit worthwhile.

Creating safe spaces

Along my career, I've met countless students wrestling with their identities. While working in Atlanta, I focused my energy on mentoring and creating spaces where they could truly be themselves. It was tough, but it cemented my commitment in this field.

What's ahead: embracing inclusive education

As I take on a new role in an online charter school, I look forward with hope. Teaching virtually melts some barriers and opens doors, allowing richer connections with students. I'm still advocating, hoping my story encourages others in accepting their true identities.

The path toward self-acceptance isn't straightforward. Even when societal pressures and personal fears loom, I'm committed in living authentically. Every day, I remind myself how transformative education and representation can be—saving and inspiring young lives.

We're not walking solo on this journey. By sharing stories, supporting each other, we're building a collective force. Together, we ensure no one feels isolated in their quest understanding and equality. Our presence and voices hold immense power.
