Joey Bonanno's story, first shared in 2018, continues inspiring countless people and shines a light on bravery within LGBTQ+ communities.
As a talented gymnast at Ohio State University, Joey Bonanno embarked on a deeply personal journey toward self-acceptance. Watching a teammate live openly as a gay athlete was a turning point that helped Joey embrace who he truly was, marking a significant chapter in his life.
Thinking back on his first visit, Joey describes it as life-altering. "The second I arrived on campus, I felt at home," he recalls. "Seeing an openly gay athlete being celebrated not only because he was skilled but because he was genuine was eye-opening. It was a moment that changed everything, making me realize I could follow my dreams while being true myself."
In his junior year, Joey found inspiration in Jake Martin, a respected gymnast and team captain from 2017. Jake's openness and leadership fostered a supportive team environment, encouraging Joey on his path toward authenticity.
Joey openly shares how he conquered his fears about fitting traditional sports roles. Embracing his true self was freeing, leading him toward success at 2017's NCAA men's gymnastics nationals.
"On finals day," Joey remembers, "I focused on my training and holding onto who I am. As I walked in, I told myself, 'I am Joey Bonanno, I am proud, I am worthy.' Those words shielded me from doubt. As I performed, a Nicki Minaj verse kept playing in my head, pushing away insecurity. It was as if my heart finally spoke out during my performance, proving how powerful self-acceptance really can be."
Joey advocates passionately about how vital it really us that universities and organizations like NCAA implement policies that fully embrace LGBTQ+ athletes. He recognizes that not every athlete gets an environment as supportive as Ohio State's was.
Joey's coming-out story serves as a powerful reminder that living openly can drive personal and societal transformation. His journey encourages others on their path and calls attention and action towards making sports more inclusive.
By 2025, Joey forged a new path, pursuing a career in medicine. His journey from a young gymnast discovering his voice, now striving in a new field, showcases resilience and authenticity.
