Dylan Mulvaney's Life-Changing Encounter with Kristin Chenoweth

Transgender influencer and performer Dylan Mulvaney is gearing up for a significant milestone in her career: starring in a musical concert in London's West End this coming April. As she prepares for this exciting opportunity, Mulvaney reflects on the pivotal moments that shaped her path to the stage. A defining experience from her youth involved a serendipitous meeting with the beloved Broadway star Kristin Chenoweth, a moment that profoundly influenced her journey.

During a heartfelt interview on the British show Queerpiphany, Mulvaney shared her story of how the musical Wicked and its original Glinda, played by Chenoweth, provided comfort during her childhood. "I would listen to the Wicked cast album on repeat, and Kristin was the Glinda on that album," she recounted, highlighting how the music became a source of solace.

At the time, Kristin Chenoweth was starring in the Broadway production of Promises Promises. Mulvaney, then just 12 years old, was inspired to reach out to her idol, penning fan letters and even daring to ask Chenoweth for coffee. To her surprise, Chenoweth responded warmly.

"Crazy enough, I get an email that said, 'Kristin has never received a better letter in her life, and no, she can’t go to coffee with you, but she’d like to bring you backstage at Promises Promises." The invitation was more than Mulvaney could have imagined.

The experience of meeting Chenoweth backstage was transformative. "She brings us backstage, she’s like, ‘You’re going to sing with me one day, and you’re going to do this with your life, I already know it.’ She basically encouraged me to pursue musical theatre," Mulvaney recalled. Chenoweth's words of encouragement stayed with Mulvaney as she navigated her own path, including coming to terms with her identity as a transgender woman.

Reflecting on that pivotal encounter, Mulvaney shared, "Even when I was struggling with my identity and coming out, I always came back to theater. Kristin helped make that idea possible." The meeting served as a beacon of hope, especially during challenging times in her adolescence.

Mulvaney was also inspired by Chenoweth's unique blend of faith and acceptance, noting, "What really inspired me was that she has such a unique, special relationship with a higher power and faith. She loves queer people, but she also loves church, and I grew up very religious. So for me, she kind of was the thing that felt like I was allowed to be both and that maybe a God could love me."

As Mulvaney continues to make strides in her career, she is preparing to perform in the new musical We Aren't Kids Anymore at London's prestigious Savoy Theatre on April 28, 2025. This upcoming performance marks a significant achievement in her artistic journey and serves as a testament to the power of mentorship and inspiration.

Kristin Chenoweth, who has been back in the spotlight with the launch of the Wicked film and her surprise cameo, continues to advocate for LGBTQ+ rights. In December, she responded to criticism from conservative groups with characteristic grace and strength. Chenoweth's support for the LGBTQ+ community and her refusal to succumb to negativity further solidify her status as an icon and ally.

Mulvaney's story is a testament to the impact that encouragement and representation can have on young LGBTQ+ individuals. Her journey underscores the importance of having role models who not only support their artistic dreams but also affirm their identities. As she prepares to take the stage in London, Mulvaney carries with her the lessons and encouragement from her childhood hero, Kristin Chenoweth, shining a light for others on a similar path.
