Transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney is gearing up for an exciting opportunity to star in a musical concert at London’s renowned West End this coming April. Reflecting on her journey to this point, Mulvaney shares how a pivotal encounter with Kristin Chenoweth, the original Glinda from the Wicked musical, played a significant role in shaping her path.
During a recent appearance on the British show Queerpiphany, Mulvaney opened up about the impact the Wicked soundtrack had on her during her childhood. "I listened to the Wicked cast album repeatedly, and Kristin was the Glinda on that album," she shared. The music provided comfort and inspiration during her formative years.
At the age of twelve, Mulvaney was a devoted fan of Chenoweth, who was performing in a Broadway show called Promises, Promises at the time. Eager to express her admiration, Mulvaney began writing fan letters to Chenoweth. "I asked her to coffee," Mulvaney said, recalling her youthful enthusiasm.
To Mulvaney’s amazement, she received a reply. "To my surprise, I received an email saying, ‘Kristin has never received a better letter in her life, and while she can’t go to coffee with you, she’d like to invite you backstage at Promises, Promises."
Mulvaney described the enchanting experience of meeting Chenoweth. "We attended the show, she invited us backstage, and she said, ‘You’re going to sing with me one day, and you’re going to do this with your life, I already know it.’ She encouraged me to follow my passion for musical theatre," Mulvaney recounted with gratitude.
Chenoweth’s words of encouragement stayed with Mulvaney, guiding her as she pursued a career in performing arts. Beyond her career, this experience also helped Mulvaney in embracing her identity as a transgender person.
"Even when I faced challenges with my identity, coming out, and navigating adolescence, theater was always there for me," Mulvaney said. "Kristin helped make the idea possible that I could be true to myself."
Mulvaney also found inspiration in Chenoweth’s ability to balance her faith with her support for the LGBTQ+ community. "She has a unique, special relationship with faith," Mulvaney noted. "She loves queer people and also loves church. Growing up very religious myself, she showed me that it was possible to reconcile these aspects of my life."
Chenoweth has recently returned to the spotlight with the launch of the Wicked film adaptation. In December, she addressed criticisms from a conservative group encouraging a boycott of the film due to its "LGBTQ agenda." Chenoweth humorously dismissed their claims, emphasizing her commitment to artistry and inclusion.
"Everyone knows the ‘one million Moms’ are just a few hundred," Chenoweth commented, expressing her belief in the power of entertainment and the positive impact of the arts.
As for Mulvaney, she is set to perform in the new musical We Aren’t Kids Anymore at London’s Savoy Theater on April 28, 2025. This opportunity marks a significant milestone in her career and a testament to the support and encouragement she received early on.
Mulvaney’s story is a reminder of the profound impact mentors can have in helping individuals navigate their personal and professional journeys. Through the power of music, theater, and the unwavering support of allies like Kristin Chenoweth, Mulvaney has embraced her identity and continues to inspire others to do the same.
