Rutger published: Drag Race UK Star Pixie Polite Faces String of Homophobic Attacks, Urges Community Vigilance

A contestant from RuPaul's Drag Race UK has bravely opened up about facing a frightening series recently—homophobic and transphobic attacks, no less. Sadly, this surge in hostility has understandably made her more vigilant about her safety.

Pixie Polite, a cherished queen from Drag Race UK's fourth season, has endured four separate incidents in just one month. Can you believe it? Two happened during one train trip alone.

A frightening encounter in south-west London

On Monday, July 28, 32-year-old Pixie shared a gut-wrenching story on social media. While shopping at Tesco in Colliers Wood, south-west London, she was physically assaulted in a homophobic attack, punched right in her head.

The impact left her with bruising on her neck, and it was serious enough that police have started investigating it as a hate crime.

What happened that day

Pixie—whose real name's Mark Wickens—gave details on how it all went down. Standing in line at Tesco, two men started throwing nasty comments her direction. Pixie tried ignoring them, but when one man touched her, she'd had enough. She asked him politely enough, but it escalated with slurs thrown her direction.

As she tried stepping away, Pixie confronted him, which led him punching her in back. Lucky a bystander jumped in, preventing worse harm. Pixie managed snap a photo, and immediately reported him, though he hasn't been arrested yet.

The spike in verbal abuse

Besides being physically attacked, Pixie's faced terrifying verbal abuse, whether she's in drag or not. Earlier in 2023, a man even threatened her with a whisky bottle while screaming anti-gay slurs in South London. And sadly these incidents have ramped up lately.

On a train ride from Colchester headed towards Liverpool Street, she overheard a group spewing hostile comments about trans folks and drag queens. When their trash talk turned personal and threatening, she felt exposed—even in a crowded space.

Then, as if that wasn't enough, once off at Liverpool Street, someone else yelled a homophobic slur at her. It's just heartbreaking, isn't it?

Being a vocal advocate

Pixie thinks that rising homophobia stems from increasing anti-trans rhetoric, spurred on by certain government policies. She's worried how damaging stereotypes about LGBTQ+ people are creeping back, just like they did in past decades.

But Pixie won't back down. She passionately advocates and stresses how vital it remains reporting hate crimes, as these reports inform public policy. She encourages everyone in LGBTQ+ community share their stories online so their voices are heard.

Standing strong and visible

Even though there seems less recorded homophobic hate crimes in England and Wales, numbers are still disturbingly high as compared before 2021. Pixie, once confident traveling in drag, now finds herself more wary.

"I've become more cautious," she admits. "Sometimes it feels easier getting ready at a venue rather than traveling in drag. But I won't let fear define who I am. Being visible defies hate and supports those who aren't ready stand out."

Pixie remains determined use her platform highlighting ongoing challenges LGBTQ+ community faces. Telling these stories ensures conversation on hate crimes stays front and center.

If you see or experience something like this, don't stay silent. Contact authorities right away. Dial 101, reach out anonymously via Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111, or check True Vision online. In emergencies, always call 999.
