Renowned for their fierce performances and distinctive style, Bimini Bon-Boulash, a beloved figure from RuPaul’s Drag Race UK, recently opened up about their experience on the intense reality show, Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins. This military-style challenge series, known for its grueling physical tests and psychological assessments, offered Bimini an opportunity to test their limits and showcase their resilience.
Last month, fans were thrilled when Bimini, who identifies as non-binary and uses they/them pronouns, was announced as part of the celebrity lineup for the Channel 4 series. The show’s format involves placing public figures in demanding training scenarios similar to those faced by candidates for the UK’s Special Forces. Bimini joined three other LGBTQ+ contestants, making this season particularly inclusive and diverse. In total, 14 celebrities took on the challenge, each pushing themselves to the brink in the beautiful yet formidable landscapes of Wales.
Under the watchful eyes of instructors Billy Billingham, Jason Fox, Rudy Reyes, and Chris Oliver, the participants embarked on a journey designed to test their endurance, teamwork, and mental fortitude. However, as the series progressed, only five contestants managed to make it to the final stage, which aired on August 25.
Bimini was among the final contenders, standing alongside notable figures such as out lesbian singer-songwriter Lucy Spraggan, former Love Island contestant Adam Collard, ex-professional football player Troy Deeney, and Michaella McCollum, known from the "Peru Two" incident. Despite their strong performance throughout the series, Bimini and Collard narrowly missed out on securing the top spot.
After the series finale, Bimini took to social media to reflect on their journey. In a heartfelt post, they expressed both disappointment and pride. "I was gutted to miss out RIGHT at the end," they shared, "but I’m happy with everything I achieved on the show. I stuck to my morals and I can proudly say that… I DID smash it! #SASWhoDaresWins."
The journey wasn’t just about physical challenges for Bimini; it also highlighted their strong ethical stance. During the final phase, which involved a rigorous interrogation process, Bimini was faced with a moral dilemma. Instructed to pour cold water over fellow contestant Michaella McCollum as a means of coercion during an interrogation, Bimini chose to uphold their principles. This decision ultimately led to their elimination from the competition.
The instructors, observing from a distance, acknowledged Bimini’s choice. "That’s an epic fail for No.1," they announced, referring to Bimini's participant number. "You’ve been unsuccessful in this phase of the course. In my professional opinion, you tried to protect somebody from unpleasant conduct rather than any threat of any physical danger." While this marked the end of their journey on the show, Bimini’s actions were celebrated by many as a testament to their character and commitment to their values.
With the conclusion of the series, Lucy Spraggan, Troy Deeney, and Michaella McCollum emerged as winners, having triumphed over the extreme challenges presented by the show. Spraggan, in particular, shared her disbelief and joy at finishing the course successfully. "I couldn’t believe it, to pass, wow, incredible," she said. "It was about 9 million times worse than I thought it was going to be. It’s utterly traumatising, but unbelievably rewarding. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime thing because I will never do that again!"
For Bimini, the journey was about more than just reaching the end; it was about staying true to themselves and inspiring others to do the same.
