Rutger published: Drag Race Star Shares Journey of Embracing Her Trans Identity

A beloved star from the iconic RuPaul’s Drag Race has opened up about her personal journey to embracing her identity as a transgender woman. Initially hesitant to accept her truth due to societal and familial concerns, she found the courage to live authentically with crucial support from fellow Drag Race alum, Kylie Sonique.

Laganja Estranja, who gained fame on season six of the show in 2014, alongside contestants like BenDeLaCreme and Adore Delano, has become an inspiring figure in the LGBTQ+ community. Although she publicly came out as a trans woman in 2021, her journey of self-acceptance began years before.

Finding the Courage to Transition

“I didn’t want to accept that I was trans,” Laganja shared candidly in a recent interview. “I was already living openly as a queer, effeminate man and doing drag. My personal and drag identities were kept very separate. When the performances ended, I would shed my drag persona, removing the makeup, keeping my beard, and trying to blend into society as a gay male.”

The COVID-19 pandemic became a pivotal moment for Laganja. The introspection and time alone during the lockdown gave her the clarity she needed to embrace her true self. “For so long, I thought about waiting until my parents weren’t around anymore. I didn’t want to burden them with my transition. But something shifted, and I knew I wanted them to know the real me. I wanted them to see the brave, bold, beautiful person they had raised, who happens to be a transgender woman.”

Laganja’s decision to come out was not just about personal freedom, but also about visibility and representation for the trans community. “Seeing more trans women in the spotlight and living authentically is a beautiful thing. It’s important for people to see that they are not alone in their journey.”

Kylie Sonique’s Impactful Advice

One of the key figures in Laganja’s journey was Kylie Sonique, who made history as the first trans winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race. Reflecting on their first meeting, Laganja recalled, “When I met Kylie on the patio at Mickey’s in West Hollywood, I told her, ‘I think I’m trans. What should I do?’ Her advice was simple yet profound: take it step by step and go at my own pace.”

This guidance was instrumental in helping Laganja navigate her journey with patience and self-compassion. The support she received from Kylie and the broader LGBTQ+ community has been a constant source of strength for her.

Progress in Representation

Over the years, RuPaul’s Drag Race has evolved significantly. Previously criticized for its lack of trans representation, the show is now celebrating a new era of inclusivity, with more contestants feeling empowered to come out as transgender during or after their time on the series.

“It’s wonderful to witness the change,” Laganja stated. “We’re seeing more people comfortable in their own skin, both on the show and in their daily lives. This visibility is crucial for young trans individuals who are looking for role models.”

New Ventures and Future Plans

Beyond her powerful personal journey, Laganja Estranja is also exploring new avenues in entertainment. She is part of the cast of Drag House Rules, a reality series on OUTtv, alongside famous names like Jujubee and Manila Luzon.

The series promises to be a delightful mix of drama and entertainment, showcasing the lives and careers of its talented cast. Fans can catch the first episode now available for streaming on OUTtv.

Laganja’s story is one of courage, authenticity, and resilience. Her decision to live openly as a transgender woman has not only empowered her but has also inspired countless others to embrace their true selves. Her journey reminds us all of the importance of self-acceptance and the power of community.
