I'd always been a queer, effeminate man doing drag… My identities were a bit compartmentalized." She shared, "For a long time, I thought, ‘I'll wait 'til my parents are gone. I can't put them through this.' But then, something shifted, and I realized I wanted them fully in my life." Her desire became about honesty and connection, forging a new path in her relationship with her family.
Finding support from fellow trailblazers
Along this journey, Laganja found essential support in Kylie Sonique Love, a fellow Drag Race alum and a trailblazer as its first transgender winner. Their conversation in West Hollywood was a game-changer, with Laganja recalling, "I confided in her, saying, 'I think I'm trans. What now?' Her advice—'Take things slow, one step at a time'—really stayed with me."
That guidance genuinely resonated, allowing Laganja space and grace in discovering her identity, which she's since embraced with unwavering joy.
An ever-evolving culture
Laganja's journey highlights a growing acceptance and joy in transgender identities both within Drag Race and society. "We're seeing more people comfortable in their own skin," she pointed out, noting a positive cultural shift towards inclusivity.
Though Drag Race initially had its challenges with trans representation, Laganja describes its current embrace as a "beautiful evolution" that enhances visibility and acceptance.
Venturing forward: New projects and advocacy
Laganja Estranja continues forging her path by joining Drag House Rules on OUTtv—a new reality series featuring other Drag Race alumnae like Jujubee and Silky Nutmeg Ganache. Episode one has already premiered, promising more entertainment and representation.
