The heartbreaking loss in April 2023, when beloved drag artist Heklina was found dead, has stirred a powerful outcry among LGBTQ+ communities and fellow performers. A crowd gathered in London, demanding answers and justice, especially questioning how London's Metropolitan Police has handled this tragic case.
Stefan Grygelko, known and loved as Heklina, was discovered lifeless in Soho Square by Peaches Christ, another respected drag performer and close friend. Initially, police called Heklina's death "unexpected." She was set on stage soon in a show called *Mommie Queerest* touring in London and Manchester with Peaches Christ.
In response, friends and LGBTQ+ allies organized a protest march, moving from Big Ben straight towards New Scotland Yard. They aimed not just at paying tribute but also at spotlighting a possible bias in how police handle such cases. The Metropolitan Police has since acknowledged these concerns and apologized.
During this march, several notable figures took a stand. Drag artists like Cheddar Gorgeous and Crystal, musician Ana Matronic from Scissor Sisters, human rights activist Peter Tatchell, and Zoë Garbett from Green Party all spoke passionately. Signs saying "Queer safety over police power" and "Pride, not prejudice" set a clear message: It was time law enforcement took accountability seriously.
Peaches Christ shared, "Heklina was one my oldest, dearest friends. Finding her was a nightmare, and it was made worse by how little attention it got from police. We just want fair treatment and real change."
About 100 people marched, urging that Heklina's sudden death be thoroughly investigated.
Earlier, police shared CCTV footage showing three people at Heklina's place on that fateful night, asking folks if they could help spot them. Peaches Christ feels this took too long, blaming what she sees as an anti-LGBTQ+ bias in police behavior.
A critical review by Baroness Louise Casey in March 2023 pointed out deep-seated issues within Met Police, calling it homophobic, racist, and misogynistic. This has only fueled worries over whether Heklina's case will ever see justice done right.
Cheddar Gorgeous aptly put it during her talk, "Nobody's identity should change how they're treated by police. Every life needs a real, fair investigation."
Crystal also shared some personal struggles with seeking justice, talking about how marginalized communities fight hard just trying get fair treatment. "Heklina was vital in my career, and how this investigation's been handled just disgusts me," Crystal shared.
Paul Fleming from Equity, a union supporting performers, reached out directly out London Mayor Sadiq Khan. He pushed Khan with questions on what went wrong with this investigation, tying it back Baroness Casey's findings on institutional homophobia.
Fleming didn't stop there. He highlighted other issues facing drag performers in London, like venues closing down and more violence against LGBTQ+ folks, all while trust in law enforcement sits at a low.
On their part, Detective Chief Superintendent Christina Jessah acknowledged people's frustrations, promising a committed effort uncovering truth and addressing LGBTQ+ community's worries.
But Heklina's passing still ripples through her community, sparking essential talks on fairness, justice—and how police must protect marginalized people properly.
