Rutger published: Drag Performer Condemns Marjorie Taylor Greene's Remarks as Ignorant and Hateful

A prominent drag performer, Lil’ Miss Hot Mess, has publicly denounced Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) for her inflammatory comments during a recent congressional hearing. Greene branded the performer as a “monster” and a “child predator,” accusations that Lil’ Miss Hot Mess has labeled as ignorant and fascistic.

Rep. Greene, during a hearing focused on the potential defunding of public broadcasters PBS and NPR, accused these organizations of serving as "radical left-wing echo chambers" and of "sexualizing children." Part of Greene’s evidence included a PBS YouTube video featuring Lil’ Miss Hot Mess reading her book The Hips on the Drag Queen Go Swish, Swish, Swish. This video, according to Greene, is inappropriate for children despite its playful and non-vulgar nature akin to the classic children’s song “The Wheels on the Bus.”

Addressing the Allegations

Greene expressed her disdain during the hearing, stating, “That’s repulsive. That’s not what children ages three to eight should ever be watching: a grown biological man posing as a woman.” She further criticized public broadcasters, suggesting that PBS has moved away from its traditional programming.

In response, PBS CEO Paula Kerger clarified that the video in question was not funded or distributed by PBS, but was a project by the New York City Department of Education in collaboration with WNET, New York’s public broadcasting company. Kerger emphasized that the video had been mistakenly uploaded and promptly removed from the PBS website.

Lil’ Miss Hot Mess took to social media to defend herself and criticize Greene’s rhetoric. On Facebook, the performer wrote, “Marjorie Taylor Greene should find another hobby besides attacking drag queens, public media, and other beloved American institutions. Her political bullying masquerades as a promotion of liberty when in reality, it seeks to dictate our thoughts and actions — that’s not freedom, that’s fascism.”

Freedom of Expression Under Threat

The performer elaborated on the broader implications of Greene's campaign against PBS and NPR, arguing that attempts to defund these organizations amount to censorship. “The reality is that communities all over the country deserve access to educational public media that reflects the diversity and creativity of our world,” Lil’ Miss Hot Mess stated.

Highlighting the harmful consequences of Greene’s remarks, the performer noted, “Greene’s distracting transphobia and homophobia harm real LGBTQ children and adults and teach nothing but hate.”

Lil’ Miss Hot Mess concluded her statement with a call for kindness: “Ultimately, Greene should learn a lesson from drag performers. Rather than spreading disinformation and hate, leading with kindness, love, and joy (plus a flawless face) will get you everywhere you need to go in life.”

Political and Public Reactions

Democratic lawmakers and advocates mocked Greene’s hearing for its perceived absurdity. Rep. Robert Garcia (D-CA) humorously questioned whether beloved Sesame Street character Elmo, who is red, could be considered a communist. Garcia then turned serious, underscoring the trust Americans place in PBS and the benefits of public broadcasting as a tool for education and emergency services.

He accused Greene and her party of attempting to silence media voices they disagree with. “If we’re going to get rid of any puppeteers,” Garcia quipped, “it should be the one currently controlling the Executive Branch.”

Public broadcasting in the United States receives a modest portion of its funding from the federal government — about $1.60 per American annually. Despite its limited financial impact, PBS and NPR have been the targets of conservative criticism for what some perceive as excessive government spending.

Through this controversy, Lil’ Miss Hot Mess and her supporters aim to highlight the importance of diverse representation and freedom of expression, particularly as these issues impact the LGBTQ+ community. The drag performer’s response emphasizes the need for dialogue grounded in understanding and respect, countering narratives that seek to marginalize and silence.

As debates over public broadcasting and cultural representation continue, voices like Lil’ Miss Hot Mess’s will remain crucial in advocating for an inclusive and tolerant society.
