Rutger published: Dorian Film Awards Nominees Celebrated by LGBTQ Entertainment Critics

The nominees are in! The 16th Annual Dorian Awards have been announced, courtesy GALECA: The Society Of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics. Sure, other global events might be grabbing headlines, but this announcement deserves some spotlight too. It celebrates those unique LGBTQ perspectives in film that often lead cultural trends long before they break through. The Dorian Awards continue setting that high bar by showcasing voices that don't always get their due.

Shining a light on unique films

This year, it's all about those offbeat films that bigger awards tend not even glance at. Horror's getting some love with Jane Schoenbruns "I Saw The TV Glow" and Coralie Fargeats "The Substance" earning spots in top categories. It's clear that queer critics are championing this thrilling genre, and it seems like others are taking notice too.

Celebrating diversity and creativity

Dorian Gray might have inspired their name, but these awards are anything but outdated. Categories like Best Genre Film, Best Unsung Film, and even Campiest Film? Now that's how you keep things interesting! Plus, their inclusive format means all genders compete together, which truly embraces diversity.

"I Saw The TV Glow," a surreal horror flick with trans themes, has snagged nine nominations, including Best Film and Best LGBTQ Film. Jane Schoenbruns not only captured nods with directing and screenplay but also had actors Justice Smith and Brigette Lundy-Paine recognized too. Its striking visuals? They've got a nomination as well.

Nipping at its heels with eight nods, "The Substance" offers some dark body-horror with a twist. It's eyeing wins in Best, Campiest, Genre, and Most Visually Striking Film. Performances by Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley? They're in contention too, with directing and screenplay mentions on top.

Storytelling that knows no bounds

Though it didn't make Film Of The Year, "Emilia Pérez," a trans mobster musical, still garnered six nominations. From Best LGBTQ Film and Non-English-Language Film, it's got nods all over, including performances by Karla Sofía Gascón and Zoe Saldaña. Meanwhile, Luca Guadagnino's "Challengers" shines across its categories too.

Films like "Anora," "Nickel Boys," and "Wicked" are also breaking new ground. Guadagnino's take on Burroughs' "Queer" just adds more depth and variety that these awards recognize.

GALECA's support goes beyond films

GALECA isn't just about films. They've pledged $1,000 toward an emergency relief fund started by Los Angeles Press Club, aiding entertainment journalists hit by wildfires. It's a gesture that speaks volumes about GALECA's community focus.

John Griffiths, GALECA's Executive Director, highlighted how essential journalists are in Hollywood, saying, "We want them supported during these trying times." Diane Anderson-Minshall, Vice President, also shared her solidarity, stressing community support's importance.

We'll see who takes home a Dorian on February 13, when awards like Rising Star, Timeless Star, Film Trailblazer, and Wilde Artist find their new honorees. The Dorian Awards are all about celebrating those voices that might otherwise be overlooked, and as they grow, they keep championing diverse perspectives, enriching our cultural narrative one story at a time.
