Their storied romance began in 1964 in a rather unexpected setting—a laundromat in Nashville. Parton had just arrived in the city with dreams of pursuing a music career when she crossed paths with Carl. "I'd come to Nashville with dirty clothes," she shared in an interview. "And after I'd put my clothes in the machine, I started walkin’ down the street, just lookin’ at my new home, and this guy hollered at me, and I waved. Bein’ from the country, I spoke to everybody. And he came over and, well, it was Carl, my husband."

Carl Dean, who was known for his work in the asphalt business, was instantly smitten with the young singer. His first words to her were a playful warning about getting sunburnt, as she recalled, "He seemed to be genuinely interested in finding out who I was and what I was about."
