Rutger published: Dolly Parton Declines Prestigious Award Multiple Times: "Not Sure I Deserve It"

Dolly Parton is a beloved figure in the world of country music and beyond, known not only for her incredible talent and unforgettable voice but also for her philanthropic efforts and humble nature. Recently, news emerged that Parton has politely declined the offer to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom on three separate occasions.

The Presidential Medal of Freedom is one of the highest civilian awards in the United States, granted to individuals who have made significant contributions to the security or national interests of America, world peace, or cultural or other significant public or private endeavors. Despite the prestige associated with this accolade, Parton has expressed hesitation about accepting it.

Awarded to Many, Accepted by Few

Among those who have accepted the medal recently are former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, acclaimed actor Michael J. Fox, who has been open about his battle with Parkinson’s disease, iconic musician Bono, fashion mogul Ralph Lauren, and renowned conservationist Jane Goodall. These individuals received their honors from President Joe Biden earlier this year.

In contrast, Dolly Parton was noticeably absent from the ceremony. The fact-checking website Snopes highlighted on social media that Parton has declined the prestigious award not once but three times. The first two offers reportedly came from former President Donald Trump, and the third from President Biden himself.

Reasons for Declining

In a candid interview on NBC's Today show, Parton revealed some of the reasons behind her decision. Initially, she cited logistical issues as a barrier to accepting the award. She explained, "I was offered the freedom award from the Trump administration, but I couldn’t accept it because my husband was ill at the time."

The offer came again, but circumstances had changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to further hesitations. "I wouldn’t travel because of COVID-19," Parton added. However, her reservations went beyond mere logistics.

"Now, I feel if I take it, I’ll be doing politics, so I’m not sure," she continued. Parton, who has always maintained a focus on her music and charitable work, expressed uncertainty about whether she truly deserves such an honor. "I don’t work for those awards. It’d be nice, but I’m not sure that I even deserve it. That’s a nice compliment for people to think that I might deserve it."

Commitment to Philanthropy

Indeed, Parton’s career is marked by numerous philanthropic endeavors, many of which focus on supporting LGBTQ+ communities and other charitable causes. At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, she made headlines for donating $1 million to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Tennessee. This contribution was instrumental in the development of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine.

Reflecting on her donation, Parton said in 2021, "Mine was a small part, and I probably get a lot more credit than I deserve, but I was happy to be part of that, and to be able to try to stop something in its tracks that’s become a monster for all of us." Her humility and generosity have long been defining characteristics of her public persona.

More recently, Parton contributed $1 million to help with the Hurricane Helene relief efforts after the disaster claimed over 200 lives in the southeastern United States. Her ongoing commitment to helping those in need has earned her admiration and respect from fans and peers alike.

As we reflect on Dolly Parton’s legacy, it becomes clear that her impact reaches far beyond her music. Through her charitable contributions and unwavering dedication to supporting various causes, she continues to inspire millions around the world.
