At the forefront of the music industry, Doechii has boldly condemned the ongoing political attacks against the transgender community in the United States. Her comments came during the acceptance of the Outstanding Music Artist award at the prestigious GLAAD Media Awards.
The talented rapper, known for her hit "Anxiety," surpassed notable artists including Billie Eilish, Elton John, and Orville Peck to secure the award at the 36th GLAAD Media Awards, held in Los Angeles.
The award was presented to Doechii by fellow icon Lil Nas X, a previous recipient of the award in both 2020 and 2022, alongside the acclaimed bisexual country-pop singer Maren Morris.
When she took to the stage, Doechii expressed heartfelt gratitude to GLAAD for their unwavering support. She highlighted the organization's commitment to promoting LGBTQ+ visibility and acceptance in media, an endeavor that has been ongoing since its inception, with a significant milestone approaching in 2025 when GLAAD will celebrate its 40th anniversary.
"This organization was founded on the principles of acceptance, inclusiveness, and empowerment, principles that I passionately believe in and advocate for," Doechii declared. "These values continue to drive me forward, especially in the current climate where the hard-fought cultural changes and rights for transgender individuals and the broader LGBTQ+ community are under threat. I am appalled. Appalled."
While Doechii did not explicitly mention any political figures, her remarks were widely interpreted as a criticism of recent policy actions that have sought to limit the rights of transgender people in the United States. These efforts include attempts to bar transgender individuals from serving in the military, restrict funding for healthcare providers offering gender-affirming care to trans youth, and prevent transgender women from participating in female sports categories.
Doechii continued her powerful speech by affirming, "We are here and we are not going anywhere." She emphasized the profound sense of support and love she felt while receiving the award from GLAAD, noting that it was both uplifting and empowering. "As I continue in my life and career, this support is a beacon to other aspiring artists: do not let anyone block your dreams," she stated emphatically.
The ceremony also featured a touching moment with Broadway legend Patti LuPone, who paid homage to queer pioneers by delivering a string of memorable quotes from the iconic show Drag Race.
In addition to winning the Outstanding Music Artist award, Doechii achieved another milestone earlier in the year by winning her first Grammy Award in the Best Rap Album category. The recognition at the GLAAD Media Awards places her among previous winners such as Lady Gaga, Scissor Sisters, Troye Sivan, and Sam Smith. Last year's award went to Reneé Rapp, celebrated for her song "Snow Angel."
The 2025 GLAAD Media Awards ceremony honored several other significant contributions to LGBTQ+ representation in media. Among the notable winners were Agatha All Along, Baby Reindeer, RuPaul’s Drag Race, and Will Ferrell's groundbreaking Netflix documentary, Will & Harper, which explores transgender identities.
Doechii's statements at the awards underscore the ongoing challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community and reinforce the importance of supporting and uplifting marginalized voices in the face of adversity.
