In today’s world, few concepts are as misunderstood as "DEI"—diversity, equity, and inclusion. Despite its critics, DEI remains a vital part of making sports more inclusive and welcoming, especially for LGBTQ+ individuals.

Consider the case of professional hockey player Joey Gale, who expressed appreciation for the Seattle Kraken's commitment to LGBTQ outreach. His praise highlighted the positive impact DEI efforts have on sports organizations. Initially, my reaction was one of skepticism, a reflection of how politicized the term "DEI" has become. However, upon reflection, it was clear that Gale’s acknowledgment was a sincere compliment.

DEI: Beyond Politics

Before DEI became a buzzword in political debates, it was already being championed by LGBTQ+ pioneers in sports. These individuals took immense pride in the DEI initiatives within their teams. Through their efforts, the sports industry has become a more dynamic and welcoming environment, particularly in front offices across various leagues.

Even NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has recognized the importance of diversity within the league. At a recent Super Bowl media event, he underscored the NFL’s commitment to diversity, stating, "We think we're better when we get different perspectives, people with different backgrounds … we make ourselves stronger and we make ourselves better when we have that." This sentiment is not just about being trendy; it’s about enhancing the organization with a variety of talents and perspectives.

Historical Lessons and Modern Applications

Historically, sports teams have thrived by integrating diverse players, which not only improved performance on the field but also boosted their popularity within local communities. Unfortunately, this diversity did not immediately extend to the business side of sports, which remained predominantly white and male for many years.

However, as the entertainment industry evolved, sports teams acknowledged the need for broader representation. This realization led to a push for more inclusive environments, which is the essence of DEI—not just a political tool but common sense for sustainable growth.

Creating Inclusive Workplaces

As organizations diversified, new challenges emerged: ensuring these inclusive environments allowed all employees to thrive authentically. For instance, the San Francisco Giants appointed Roscoe Mapps, an openly queer executive, as their first chief diversity officer. Mapps emphasized that DEI involves navigating complexity and fostering open, honest communication among diverse teams.

Similarly, Nona Lee, a gay executive with the Arizona Diamondbacks, highlighted her work with the DEI-centered group "D-backs for Change" as her proudest achievement. Her efforts focused on creating welcoming spaces for people of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, and Indigenous people—spaces she wished existed when she began her career.

Shifting Paradigms and Inspiring Change

Profiles of LGBTQ+ leaders in sports consistently reveal a desire to serve as role models for the next generation. They strive to create environments they would have welcomed in their formative years. This aspiration underscores the transformative potential of DEI in fostering inclusive and supportive sports communities.

While this message may not sway political critics, it is a rallying cry for those who believe in an inclusive sports industry. DEI has demonstrably enriched sports, making it a more vibrant and supportive field. Moving forward, the sports industry would benefit from embracing DEI, as it not only reflects the diversity of fans and communities but also enhances the business itself.

The time is now to reclaim DEI from its detractors and celebrate its role in strengthening the sports world. Subscribe to updates on inspiring LGBTQ+ sports stories and discover how inclusion continues to shape the future of sports.
