What began as a simple disagreement over a dog at a clothing-optional beach spiraled into a frightening and transphobic assault on a trans woman enjoying a day by the New Jersey coast.
Eve Riley, 28, was walking with a friend and his dog at Gunnison Beach, located on the northern part of New Jersey's shoreline, when a man in his 50s confronted them. The man, upset about the presence of the dog, insisted that dogs are not allowed on the beach.
Despite the dog being on a leash and within the permitted timeframe for dogs to be on ocean-facing beaches – which is between mid-September and mid-March – the man vehemently argued otherwise.
When Riley stepped in to support her friend, the man's anger shifted towards her, focusing on her trans identity. Riley recounted that his verbal tirade included derogatory remarks, calling her a "freak" and other slurs, while mockingly suggesting she should "take my meds." This aggressive behavior quickly escalated further.
The man threw sand into Riley's eyes repeatedly, a tactic used to disorient and harm her. Additionally, he lashed at her with his towel, adding to the physical assault. Faced with this aggression, Riley decided to document the incident by recording it on her phone. This action prompted the man to lunge at her, attempting to knock the phone from her hands, during which he struck her in the face.
Riley managed to capture part of the encounter on video, which shows her stating, "Sand? Sand? I'm showing this to the police." The aggressor, realizing he was being recorded, fled the scene, but not before trying to involve authorities himself in an effort to have Riley disciplined.
After reaching out to the authorities, a park ranger spoke with Riley about the incident. Despite her account and the video evidence, the ranger chose not to take immediate action against either party. A spokesperson from the Gateway National Recreation Area mentioned that a report had been filed, and an investigation into the incident was ongoing. As of now, the assailant remains unidentified.
The incident at Gunnison Beach, a location known for its breathtaking views of the Manhattan skyline and status as New Jersey's only state-sanctioned clothing-optional beach, has sparked outrage and concern within the LGBTQ+ community. Riley, her friend, and the assailant were all clothed during the encounter, highlighting that the primary focus of the attack was her gender identity rather than any beach-related regulations.
This occurrence underscores the persistent challenges faced by transgender individuals, even in seemingly progressive and safe spaces. It serves as a reminder of the importance of solidarity and support within the community, and the need to address and combat transphobia actively.
Riley's experience has resonated with many, prompting discussions around safety, acceptance, and the need for continued advocacy and awareness. By sharing her story, she hopes to bring attention to these issues and encourage others to stand up against hate and discrimination.
