Rutger published: Disgraced Former Congressman George Santos Abandons Presidential Pardon Bid

Former New York Representative George Santos, known for his controversial and deceitful past, has reportedly deleted his personal X account after announcing he will no longer seek a presidential pardon for his impending 6.5-year prison sentence. Santos, a figure shrouded in scandal and legal troubles, shared his decision in a post where he expressed resignation and disappointment with his so-called friends.

On his now-deleted X account, @MrSantosNY, Santos wrote, "For those asking… Even though I initially considered the prospect of petitioning the president with a pardon application I have [ceased] that approach as I will not spend the last 61 days I have of life scrambling on how to get past a bunch of guard dogs." He continued, "The so called ‘friends’ I have that said they’d help legit should have just told me to go f— myself, because that’s what has essentially happened with their actions. I’ve accepted my fate and don’t want to talk about it anymore." His statements follow a tumultuous period marked by legal battles and public disgrace.

Legal Troubles and Public Downfall

Earlier this month, Santos was seen in tears on television, sharing that he had begun the process of applying for a presidential pardon after pleading guilty to wire fraud and aggravated identity theft. His plea marks the latest chapter in a series of legal issues that have plagued him throughout his career.

In a May episode of Piers Morgan Uncensored, Santos appealed to President Trump, saying, "I’m not an altar boy, not pretending to be one, but I’m not a hardened criminal who deserves to be in prison for seven years, off what I would call ‘ambitious mistakes’ and something that I deeply regret." He expressed hope that he could use his experiences to "sniff out other bad actors doing similar actions" in the future.

Santos has accused his trial of being politicized, arguing that his old social media posts were unfairly used against him, resulting in a harsher sentence than his lawyers had sought. His 6.5-year sentence has raised concerns for Santos, particularly regarding his safety in prison and the potential separation from his family, including his four dogs and his autistic niece, who relies on him for medical support.

A History of Deceit and Controversy

Santos’s legal battles stem from a web of lies and financial misconduct. He admitted to using campaign funds, as well as someone else’s identity and credit cards, for personal gain. A recent House Ethics Committee report detailed allegations that Santos illegally spent campaign funds on luxury items, including OnlyFans subscriptions and cosmetic Botox treatments. This led to his expulsion from the House in a decisive vote.

Santos originally faced 23 federal charges, including campaign finance fraud, wire fraud, identity theft, money laundering, theft of public funds, and making false statements to federal entities. His deceit extended to lying about his educational background, employment history, and even his living situation in his congressional district.

In addition to his legal issues, Santos has been a polarizing figure due to his stance on LGBTQ+ rights. He has co-sponsored legislation aimed at rolling back LGBTQ+ civil rights and has publicly spoken against transgender individuals and what he referred to as the "radical rainbow mafia." His statements that LGBTQ+ families "create troubled individuals" have further alienated him from the community.

Despite his expulsion, Santos has continued to find ways to maintain a public presence, including creating personalized videos on the Cameo platform. He has claimed that his largely fabricated campaign biography was the work of a former campaign staffer, a claim met with skepticism given his history of dishonesty.

The Department of Justice prosecutors have described Santos as having exploited the political system for personal gain, from creating a fictitious biography to stealing from vulnerable donors. His actions have left a lasting impact on his reputation and overshadowed his brief congressional tenure.

As Santos prepares to serve his sentence, the LGBTQ+ community and his former constituents continue to grapple with the fallout of his actions. His story serves as a cautionary tale of political ambition gone awry, marked by a pattern of deceit and manipulation.
