For over two decades, I've been digging deep at where Title IX religious exemptions clash with discrimination against LGBTQ+ folks in higher education. This journey has shown me a lot, but right now, we're in a crisis like never before. LGBTQ+ centers are closing, vital programs are disappearing, and safe spaces are shrinking, pushing students back undercover just so they can stay in school.
tough times on campus
LGBTQ+ students are facing some seriously rough waters on college campuses these days. Title IX was supposed—the Education Amendments law from 1972—to make sure everyone gets an equal shot in schools that get federal money. But some private colleges have twisted religious exemptions, originally meant as a shield, turning them instead as weapons against LGBTQ+ students, like we've seen at places like Harding University.
These exemptions are shutting LGBTQ+ students out from dorms, sports, and campus life, stripping them from their basic rights. Nearly 200 private colleges are using these exemptions, impacting a huge number yearly.
personal stories: LGBTQ+ students' experiences
So many students' stories slip through our fingers, unheard but unforgettable. Some just vanish, others are pushed out, some switch schools under pressure, and many feel forced back in closets just so they can get their degree. The harm done? It runs deep and wide.
Take Marcus Hansen, a football star and top-tier academic, part and parcel with Bemidji State University who made it on Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference's All-Academic Team list. Despite excelling on and off-field, Marcus faced discrimination at Harding University. When he tried transferring, a coach supposedly told him that his sexual orientation wasn't welcome. Like many, Marcus didn't know Harding used a Title IX religious exemption, often hidden during recruitment.
the harsh cost
Marcus eventually switched over completely, joining Minnesota State University, unwilling either hiding himself or risk getting punished. While his tale ends hopefully, many LGBTQ+ students face terrible fallout: stress, anxiety, isolation, and losing key support systems.
In extremes cases? The hardships worsen mental health struggles, posing grave risks. For student-athletes, discrimination threatens scholarships, housing, healthcare, and future prospects. With sports often critical in their education and stability, discrimination can strip these benefits away overnight.
LGBTQ+ youth already shoulder unfair stress and threats based on who they are. College should be a space where they grow and explore, not a fight where their survival feels risky.
stepping up: advocate and change
Facing these challenges head-on, we must shout louder and act stronger. This moment demands we dig deep, press harder, and demand change:
- Expose discrimination funded by public dollars
- Demand clarity on religious exemptions
- Protect LGBTQ+ athletes' rights
- Push educational institutions toward fairness using media, legal, and public pressure
Sure, religious beliefs are personal. But discrimination? We can't accept it. No belief should demean a student or deny them safety or equal education access. We need a new path, one that sees religious freedom as a shared treasure, not a divisive tool.
The battle continues, but winning means diving in bravely and with determination. LGBTQ+ students deserve our unwavering support and advocacy.
