Rutger published: Disabled Trans Student Faces Social Media Ban After Online Harassment

A disabled transgender college student, targeted online for his disability and trans identity, has found himself banned from Instagram and Facebook. His accounts were suspended due to alleged violations of the platforms' "Community Standards on child sexual exploitation, abuse, and nudity," despite him being an adult who was not involved in any inappropriate conduct.

Targeted for Being Trans and Disabled

Micah Leroy, a University of Minnesota student living with cerebral palsy (CP), has been openly transgender since the age of 14. Over the years, he has shared his transition journey on Instagram, amassing a supportive following. However, his recent post-surgery picture, celebrating his top surgery, sparked outrage from several anti-transgender influencers.

Leroy's disability, CP, can sometimes be associated with cognitive issues, but many with the condition do not experience such problems. Leroy has been vocal about making his own medical decisions, asserting his legal right as an adult to do so.

Backlash from Influencers and Lawmakers

Following his top surgery post, notable figures like Oli London and Riley Gaines condemned Leroy's access to gender-affirming care. They misgendered him and spread false information about his capabilities and identity. Despite his ability to communicate effectively through various means, misinformation about his communication skills was propagated by these influencers.

Adding fuel to the fire, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), a known critic of trans rights, labeled Leroy's surgery "criminal" and questioned the medical professionals involved, despite the legality and commonality of such procedures for consenting adults.

Social Media Ban and Response

Subsequent to the online backlash, conservative activists targeted Leroy's social media accounts, leading to their suspension. Instagram and Facebook cited violations related to "child sexual exploitation, abuse, and nudity," which Leroy disputes, emphasizing his age and autonomy over his content. Despite his appeals, both platforms have upheld their decision to remove his accounts.

Leroy, however, remains undeterred. In a public statement, he expressed gratitude for the attention his situation has garnered, hoping it would further public discourse on trans and disability issues.

"Even with all the hate this has stirred up, I do believe that any publicity is good publicity in furthering my goals," Leroy stated in a video with Minnesota Public Radio. "This experience has only made me want to speak out more about disabled and trans issues as the negative responses I got have shown a side of the world that is intolerant and discriminatory based on what they perceive others can and cannot do."

In a separate interview, Leroy remained optimistic, asserting his wish to inspire others like him. "I want to blow up the internet because I want to help other people who are trans and disabled know that it’s okay," he said. "I want people to keep their minds open and not be bigots. People with disabilities are able to do whatever they f**king want."

A Call for Awareness and Understanding

Leroy's case highlights the broader societal challenges faced by trans and disabled communities, particularly in the face of public figures who use their platforms to spread misinformation and hate. Rep. Greene, among other politicians, continues to push for legislation that restricts access to gender-affirming care, adding to the hurdles faced by transgender individuals seeking medical treatment.

As the dialogue around transgender rights and acceptance continues to evolve, Leroy's story stands as a testament to resilience and the power of visibility. His determination to advocate for himself and others in similar situations underscores the ongoing need for support and understanding within and beyond the LGBTQ+ community.
