Director Departs Scream 7 Following Actress's Controversial Exit

In a surprising turn of events, Christopher Landon, who was set to direct the highly anticipated Scream 7, has decided to part ways with the franchise. The departure comes in the wake of the controversial firing of actress Melissa Barrera, which Landon has said was the catalyst for his decision.

The Scream franchise, known for its suspenseful plots and iconic slasher villain Ghostface, had recently revived its momentum with the addition of new cast members like Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega. These talented actresses joined the series with the 2022’s soft reboot and continued in Scream VI, quickly becoming fan favorites. Alongside them were other newcomers like Jasmin Savoy Brown, known for her role in Yellowjackets, and Mason Gooding. The cast also included the return of original cast member Courteney Cox, adding to the excitement of long-time fans.

However, during the pre-production phase of the planned sequel, Scream VII, both Barrera and Ortega exited the franchise. Barrera's exit was reportedly due to her public support for Palestine amidst the ongoing Israeli-Hamas conflict. This led to her being fired from the project, an experience she described as “lonely and scary.” Following her departure, Ortega also chose to leave, initially citing scheduling conflicts, but later revealing that Barrera and Landon’s departures influenced her decision.

Landon, who was brought on board for the as-yet-untitled Scream 7 in 2023, recounted his reasons for leaving the project. In an interview about the upcoming book, "Your Favorite Scary Movie: How the Scream Films Rewrote the Rules of Horror," he opened up about his emotional journey. "I made my decision to walk away about a week after [Spyglasss] fired her," he noted. "There was no movie anymore. The whole script was about her. I didn’t sign on to make ‘a Scream movie.’ I signed on to make that movie. When that movie no longer existed, I moved on."

The director also reflected on the backlash he faced on social media, which painted him as a "villain" in the wake of Barrera's firing. "They were all screaming at someone who wasn’t even on the movie anymore," Landon shared. "There were a lot of people who thought I was some sort of villain. That really got in my head. It was painful, and it was painful to lose a dream job in such a sudden and bizarre way."

With Landon’s departure, the franchise had to rethink its direction. Fortunately, Scream VII will see the return of Kevin Williamson, the original director of the 1996 Scream, stepping in to take the helm. The upcoming film promises to bring back some of the franchise’s beloved characters, even those who had previously met their demise. Fans can look forward to seeing David Arquette, Matthew Lillard, and Scott Foley reprise their roles as Dewey Riley, Stu Macher, and Roman Bridger, respectively.

Moreover, the return of Neve Campbell, the original star who was absent from the previous film due to a pay dispute, has been confirmed for Scream 7. The sequel will also welcome back Savoy Brown and Gooding, alongside fresh faces like Isabel May, Anna Camp, Celeste O'Connor, Asa Germann, Mckenna Grace, and Sam Rechner, promising an exciting mix of old and new.

As the franchise moves forward under new direction, fans eagerly await to see how Scream VII will unfold without Landon’s vision and Barrera’s character at its center. The departure of these key figures marks a significant shift in the franchise, but with a strong cast and a seasoned director like Williamson, the film’s future still holds promise.
