House speaker Mike Johnson changes course on Epstein files

In a surprising turn, House Speaker Mike Johnson backtracked on his earlier push regarding Jeffrey Epstein's files. He was pretty vocal initially, saying on "The Benny Show" podcast that even though it was a tricky subject, "it's better if everything's out in public and people get a say." Yet, during a recent press conference, he seemed more cautious, expressing that "it's important we give room" as current administration efforts unfold. Though he hinted at possible future congressional action, he was clear: "We're not quite there yet, because we're on board with what President Biden's doing."

Why did Johnson change his mind?

So, what's behind Johnson's change in stance? It's all a bit speculative, but his ties with a group called New Apostolic Reformation (NAR) might offer some clues. This evangelical movement aims at asserting Christian leadership in different parts, including politics. Johnson's admitted that NAR has greatly impacted him. Notably, NAR includes notable figures like Texas strategist Lance Wallnau, who's been a vocal supporter defending Trump when it comes down these Epstein documents. Wallnau, with quite a YouTube following, argues Trump acts in America's best interest, dismissing critics as spreading fake news against him.

Conspiracy theories and political spins

Wallnau's ideas fit right in with conspiracy theories suggesting that it's actually folks on political left stirring up evil just trying messing with Trump supporters. These beliefs have resonated within some GOP circles, similar in events linked with J.D. Vance through Wallnau's connections. Plus, Wallnau's Project 19 aims at ensuring Republican wins in key battleground states.

Christian nationalist voices weigh in

Then there's Texas pastor Joel Webbon, part Christian nationalist sphere and member TheoBros network. Even if his theology doesn't match with NAR exactly, he stands by Trump's innocence about Epstein files. His YouTube channel, over 123,000 followers, recently featured libertarian podcaster Scott Horton, who threw out a theory about Epstein's ties with Mossed, Israeli intelligence, possibly trapping Trump. This angle, also backed by right-wing host Tucker Carlson, ties in larger context US-Israel relations and persistent antisemitic stereotypes. Webbon's controversial views, including calling Judaism "parasite-like" while advocating conversion, have sparked criticism.

Voices calling out transparency and honesty

Amidst all this divisiveness, some evangelical leaders outside pro-Trump bubble call openly meeting transparency and honest accountability. Russell Moore, Christianity Today editor-in-chief, wrote op-ed urging Epstein file disclosure stressing justice importance. He emphasized keeping faith in institutions when skepticism and conspiracy theories abound.

When religion, politics, and justice collide

The ongoing Epstein files debate shows just how tangled religion, politics, and justice get. These choices aren't just about politicians—they shape larger societal ideas about responsibility and truth.
