In a lively and memorable stand against anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination, Reed Showalter, a 32-year-old aiming high as he runs in Illinois' 7th congressional district, has caught many people's attention. His unique and colorful protest against a well-known conservative group that holds anti-transgender views has sparked a lot more than just a conversation; it's getting people talking and clapping.
Reed Showalter, a Democratic hopeful and former prosecutor with a focus on anti-monopoly cases, recently received a survey from none other than The Illinois Family Institute. This group advocates biblical values in public policy and has gained notoriety over its staunch opposition towards LGBTQ+ rights.
Among other things, this survey asked if Showalter would back withholding federal funds from schools that allow transgender girls in girls' sports. They even asked this question twice! Clearly, they're very focused on restricting transgender rights in sports.
Rather than a typical response, Showalter took a creative route. He filled in their questionnaire, tucked it inside an envelope, and added a surprise—a generous sprinkle known as a “glitterbomb.” When opened, a burst from this glitter-filled envelope represents not just a mess, but also flashes a message about LGBTQ+ vibrancy and diversity.
Showalter spoke about this cheeky move in a video shared on Instagram, sharing laughs about some quirks in campaigning. “You'll get bombarded with surveys from various groups, some from really odd, goblin-like folks,” he chuckled, pointing a finger at The Illinois Family Institute.
Glitterbombing has quite a reputation in LGBTQ+ activist circles. Between 2011 and 2013, this sparkly tactic was used in protests against big names with anti-LGBTQ+ stances, like Rick Santorum and Michele Bachmann.
In fact, folks within LGBTQ+ activism have wielded glitter against inappropriate conduct within their ranks. Dan Savage, a gay sex advice columnist, once faced such a protest due his insensitive remarks about transgender issues. Though Savage later changed his tune regarding transgender rights, those glitterbombs made a lasting point about accountability.
Showalter's campaign shines a spotlight on making life more affordable and inclusive. His dedication towards LGBTQ+ rights isn't just on paper—he openly challenges systemic discrimination against transgender individuals. On Transgender Day Of Remembrance, he shared a video speaking out against violence and prejudice faced by transgender people, condemning many states' lackluster protection laws.
“There are systems in place that are simply making it hard and unfairly challenging just being trans,” he said in his video, taking a stance against policies that marginalize transgender folks. With 20 states not providing explicit protections against such discrimination, he exclaimed, “That needs changing. Seriously, it does. Full stop.” His passion underlines ongoing challenges in LGBTQ+ fight and why representative voices are so needed in politics.
Through humor and his creative glitter protest, Reed Showalter didn't just call out oppressive policies; he drew more eyes onto equality and respect issues. As political dynamics continue shifting, people like Showalter show how fresh approaches can highlight vital problems and engage a wider audience.
With LGBTQ+ rights forever in balance, Showalter's actions remind us why it's important not just stand against discrimination, but also push forward an inclusive tomorrow.
