David Tennant, beloved by many as Doctor Who, has once again made headlines with cheeky remarks aimed at JK Rowling. This all happened as conversations heat up about a new Harry Potter TV series and continue around transgender rights.
At Planet Comicon in Kansas City, during a lively Q&A, Tennant—who snagged an Emmy not too long ago—was asked if he'd hop aboard HBO Max's upcoming Harry Potter series, set two launch in 2026.
When asked, "Would you be interested if Warner Brothers gave you a call?" Tennant, who played Barty Crouch Jr. in Harry Potter and The Goblet Of Fire, flashed his trademark wit. "I mean, they're great stories," he said, with a mischievous grin, adding, "I feel like my contribution has probably been made."
He quipped, "I'm told there's an executive producer who doesn't love me on that show," prompting chuckles and applause from everyone. His remark was a nod towards his known disagreements with JK Rowling, an exec on this new series.
David Tennant isn't shy when it comes time standing up, especially when it involves trans rights, a stance that often pits him against Rowling. Last year, he was honored with a Celebrity Ally award at The British LGBT Awards, where his speech was anything but forgettable.
In his speech, Tennant directly addressed Kemi Badenoch, telling her she should "shut up" over her critical views regarding trans rights. His bold words picked up plenty media buzz and fueled discussions about LGBTQ+ issues.
He also took aim at anti-trans voices, calling them "tiny bunch" who are on "the wrong side history." He confidently predicted, "they'll all go away soon." For Tennant, supporting LGBTQ+ rights isn't just an opinion; it makes complete sense. He expressed dismay at how these important issues have been twisted in recent times, as mentioned during his chat with Fearne Cotton in a podcast.
JK Rowling, never one back away from controversy, responded on Twitter. She accused Tennant avoiding bad press because he sides with what she calls "the gender Taliban." This kept both stars firmly in media spotlight.
Kemi Badenoch didn't hold back either. "I will not shut up," she declared, rejecting Tennant's criticism. Her statement came right before she got elected as leader after a big Labour victory.
Unmoved, Tennant keeps pushing forward as a vocal supporter LGBTQ+ rights, dismissing their "weaponization" as ridiculous.
As buzz around Harry Potter reboot and trans rights continues, Tennant's humor and steadfast advocacy shine a light on these heated and important conversations.
