Doctor Who star David Tennant has recently garnered widespread admiration. His calm and respectful handling in response JK Rowling's criticism, known widely due ot her contentious views on transgender issues. Tennant, who made an appearance in Rowling's 2005 film, 2005 film adaptation Harry Potter and Goblet Fire, recently addressed these issues on ITV1's show, The Assembly.
In an episode on April 27th, Tennant addressed a range questions from a diverse panel, which included autistic and neurodivergent individuals. The focus was on his role as a trans ally, especially with Rowling's vocal opposition toward some transgender rights front and center.
Drawing an interesting parallel, Tennant likened today's treatment transgender individuals with infamous Section 28, 1988 UK law introduced under Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. This law banned promoting homosexuality in schools. "As a teenager in Thatcher's era, we had this law called Section 28," Tennant recalled. "It was meant stop promotion homosexuality in schools - a bizarre term that basically implied talking being gay could be illegal."
He further explained, "Nowadays, looking back, Section 28 seems absurd, and I fear we're watching a similar playbook unfold with trans communities, turning their rights political football."
When questioned about his past interactions with Rowling, known her gender-critical views, Tennant didn't shy away. Notably, she accused him as being part "gender Taliban" in 2024, her term those she views overly zealous in their support transgender rights.
Tennant, however, stood firm his beliefs, advocating individuals' right being who they are, as long as they harm none. His comments followed his critique then equalities minister Kemi Badenoch and her anti-trans rhetoric. At British LGBT Awards, Tennant suggested Badenoch should "shut up," calling opponents trans rights "tiny bunch whinging f**kers on wrong side history," confidently predicting their disappearance soon.
On The Assembly, when asked about Rowling's comments Tennant answered with grace, saying, "JK Rowling's written amazing stories; I've no ill will towards her. But, ideally, society can simply allow people be themselves. Let's just get out people's ways." Viewers praised his response, with one Twitter user saying, "David Tennant's more dignified in his response than I could ever be."
Another chimed in, "He's just genuinely a lovely human being," while some joked about launching a campaign make him prime minister. A fan shared heartfelt sentiments, "Almost in tears by how much I admire David Tennant. Truly a national treasure."
Tennant's dedication toward transgender community's well-being well-known. He wore trans TARDIS pin during an appearance on The One Show, and he's been vocal advocate trans children. Allegedly, back in 2008, he even turned down Rowling's cameo request Doctor Who, underscoring his commitment principles.
