Rutger published: David Tennant Kicks Off BAFTAs with Colman Domingo Duet and a Jab at Trump

David Tennant Steals The Show as BAFTA Host

Beloved by many as a former “Doctor Who,” David Tennant truly dazzled as he hosted this year's BAFTA Awards. The evening was a delightful blend, with Tennant charmingly opening with a celebrity sing-along and even throwing a cheeky dig at a certain ex-US president. It was a night that celebrated British film and captivated everyone at London's Royal Festival Hall.

A night that kicked off with laughter

It all began with a lighthearted video featuring Tennant's wife, Georgia, giving him a playful pep talk. Georgia, known both as an actress and a fierce advocate, brought just enough humor and heart, setting Tennant on an energetic path.

Embracing this jubilant atmosphere, Tennant launched right in with a lively rendition “I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)” by The Proclaimers. As he wove through eager guests, he handed off his mic, letting stars like Camila Cabello, Anna Kendrick, and Colman Domingo join in on this musical moment.

Colman Domingo, who was up that night as a Best Actor nominee, instantly became a scene-stealer with his Versace cape jacket and infectious energy, leading everyone with his enthusiastic “Da-da da da (Da-da da da).”

David Tennant's cheeky opening

After warming up with musical fun, Tennant transitioned seamlessly onto stage with his signature wit. His monologue touched on a variety topics, but one highlight was his uproarious joke about Donald Trump. By drawing a parallel between Trump's signature hair and “The Apprentice,” a film about Trump-era real estate, Tennant had everyone chuckling.

The audience enjoyed a good laugh when Tennant jested about “The Apprentice” being up against Sebastian Stan and Jeremy Strong in BAFTA nominations. He quipped, “It's this year's boldest architecture in film, apart from Donald Trump's hair,” and laughter erupted through Royal Festival Hall.

Not one easily tamed, Tennant kept going with playful banter about how Trump probably skipped “The Apprentice” since “it's a 15. It's not on Nickelodeon.” As a hilarious nod, he even suggested that uttering Trump's name thrice might have a “Beetlejuice” effect.

Mixing satire with real advocacy

Aside from his comedic flair, Tennant also doesn't shy away from using his platform as a forceful voice on pressing issues. Known as a passionate advocate, he's openly challenged figures like Kemi Badenoch on transgender matters.

Remember when Tennant told Badenoch at a past British LGBT Awards event when she needed "to shut up"? Well, his BAFTAs monologue carried a similar weight, subtly critiquing Trump-era policies that hit hard on LGBTQ+ communities, especially trans folks.

His relentless push towards equality has earned him several accolades, including being named a Celebrity Ally, all pointing back at his dedicated work towards inclusivity.

During his hosting stint, Tennant also kept everyone entertained with comments about Hollywood's love affair with plastic surgery. He hilariously tied this notion back with "The Substance," a horror flick, and ended with a light jab at Stanley Tucci's cheeky culinary reputation in “Conclave.” His banter about Tucci crafting a delightful Bellini showed off his charming and quick-thinking style.

A BAFTA night we won't forget

In all, Tennant's hosting prowess skillfully mixed humor, social insight, and cinematic celebration, striking all right chords. Not only did he entertain but Tennant also offered reflections on essential social messages, lingering in everyone's minds long after.

As awards were handed out and film accomplishments celebrated, attendees began mulling over how entertainment and advocacy are so intertwined. Tennant was a vocal reminder - we should all challenge societal norms and embrace inclusivity.
