Rutger published: David Coote: Former Premier League Referee Opens Up About His Sexuality and Career Challenges

In a candid revelation, David Coote, a former esteemed referee in English football, has publicly come out as gay. In an interview with a tabloid, Coote expressed feeling "a deep sense of shame" over his sexuality, having kept it hidden for many years.

Coote's officiating career in the Premier League spanned over six years. However, his tenure ended when the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) terminated his position in December, following an investigation into his conduct.

The 42-year-old Nottingham native was also on the FIFA international list of referees from 2020 to 2022 and played a significant role as a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) during the UEFA Euro 2024 tournament in Germany.

A Career and Controversies

In November, a leaked video surfaced online, allegedly capturing Coote making inappropriate comments about Jurgen Klopp, then the manager of Liverpool. The video, reportedly taken during the 2020/21 Premier League season, led to his suspension while PGMOL investigated the incident.

Shortly thereafter, another video emerged, purportedly showing Coote consuming a white powder while working at Euro 2024. A further allegation claimed he premeditated issuing a yellow card to a player during a 2019 match, an accusation Coote vehemently denies.

Despite the controversies, Coote's recent interview, published seven weeks after his dismissal, sheds light on his personal struggles with his identity. He stated, "I'm not telling an authentic story if I don't say that I'm gay, and that I've had real struggles dealing with hiding that."

He further elaborated on his feelings of shame, particularly during his teenage years, and shared that he came out to his parents at age 21, and to his friends four years later.

Impact of Professional Pressures

Coote's career in elite football began in the Football League (EFL) before his promotion to the Premier League in April 2018, where he officiated 112 games, including the 2023 Carabao Cup final at Wembley.

He reflected on the challenges of being a high-profile referee in the world’s most watched football league, noting that the pressure to conceal his sexuality affected his mental health. "There’s a lot to be done throughout football and more widely in society with regard to discrimination," Coote remarked.

He acknowledged receiving harsh messages throughout his career. "To add my sexuality to that would have been really difficult," he admitted.

Moving Forward

In a subsequent statement to Sky Sports, Coote expressed remorse for his actions, acknowledging they fell short of the expected standards. "I take full responsibility for my actions," he stated, "and I am truly sorry for any offense caused and the negative spotlight it placed on the game I love."

Coote emphasized that the incidents occurred during "very low times" in his life and do not reflect his current self. "My focus now is on continuing to prioritize my mental health and wellbeing," he stated. He hopes to contribute his experiences to the football community in the future.

Coote expressed gratitude to those who supported him, including family, friends, former colleagues, and countless individuals across the football community. He singled out Howard Webb, PGMOL's technical director, for his support.

"Special thanks also to the many strangers who have reached out with words of encouragement and support," Coote added, acknowledging the positive impact it had on him.

Coote's story highlights the ongoing challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals in professional sports and underscores the need for continued progress in fostering inclusivity and acceptance.
