Renowned tennis player Daria Kasatkina has officially announced her decision to switch her professional tennis allegiance from Russia to Australia, citing her desire to live authentically as an openly gay woman and her opposition to the ongoing war in Ukraine. In a recent press conference, the 27-year-old athlete, who is currently ranked world No. 12, expressed that she felt she had no other choice but to make this significant change in her career and personal life.
On 29 March, Kasatkina confirmed her decision to represent Australia going forward, following the Australian government's approval of her permanent residency application. She has been dividing her time between Dubai and Spain over the past couple of years, avoiding a return to her native Russia. This decision was influenced by her coming out as gay in 2022, as well as her relationship with fellow Russian athlete Natalia Zabiiako, an Olympic figure skater.
"With everything going on in my previous country, I didn’t have much choice," Kasatkina explained to journalists before starting her campaign at the Charleston Open. "For me, being openly gay, if I want to be myself, I have to make this step, and I did it."
Under the current political climate in Russia, LGBTQ+ rights have been increasingly restricted due to the anti-propaganda law. This legislation has resulted in numerous incidents, including the jailing of bar staff and venue owners, detention of club-goers, and even the expulsion of a gay student from university. Additionally, those opposing Russia's actions in Ukraine face severe repercussions, with many anti-war activists being fined or jailed.
Kasatkina expressed her emotions about starting this new chapter in her life as an Australian representative. "My first day as an Australian player feels different and emotional," she shared, "but I’m really happy to start this new chapter of my life representing Australia on the big stage."
In a heartfelt social media post, Kasatkina shared her excitement about her acceptance as a permanent resident in Australia. She wrote, "I am delighted to let you all know that my application for permanent residency has been accepted by the Australian Government. Australia is a place I love, is incredibly welcoming, and a place where I feel totally at home. I love being in Melbourne and look forward to making my home there."
While the decision to switch national allegiance was not easy, Kasatkina expressed her gratitude to her family, coaches, and all who have supported her throughout her tennis journey. "I will always have respect and fond appreciation for my roots, but I am thrilled to start this new chapter in my career and my life under the Australian flag. Thank you all for your understanding and continued support," she concluded.
In response to her decision, a Tennis Australia spokesperson stated, "Daria Kasatkina has informed us that she has been granted permanent residency by the Australian Government. Tennis Australia warmly welcomes Daria, currently ranked world No. 12, to the Australian tennis family. Effective immediately, Daria will compete as an Australian, and we wish her all the best for her upcoming tournaments."
Kasatkina's move to represent Australia highlights the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ athletes in regions with restrictive policies, as well as the personal sacrifices made to live authentically. Her story resonates with many in the global LGBTQ+ community and emphasizes the importance of finding a supportive environment to thrive both professionally and personally.
This significant change in Kasatkina’s career reflects her courage and determination to prioritize her identity and personal values over national affiliations, setting a powerful example for others in similar situations.
