Kasatkina, originally from Tolyatti in Western Russia, came out as gay in 2022 and has been an outspoken advocate for LGBTQ+ rights. These circumstances made it untenable for her to return to Russia, leading her to divide her time between Spain and Dubai until her application for Australian residency was approved.

"I am delighted to let you all know that my application for permanent residency has been accepted by the Australian Government," she wrote. "Australia is a place I love, is incredibly welcoming, and a place where I feel totally at home. I love being in Melbourne and look forward to making my home there."
Kasatkina continued, "As part of this, I am proud to announce that I will be representing my new homeland, Australia, in my professional tennis career from this point onwards." She acknowledged the complexity of her decision, extending her thanks to her family and coaches who have supported her throughout her tennis journey.
"I will always have respect and fond appreciation for my roots, but I am thrilled to start this new chapter in my career and my life under the Australian flag. Thank you all for your understanding and continued support." Her message was concluded with a symbolic purple heart emoji and an Australian flag.

Before receiving her residency, the 27-year-old Kasatkina had been competing on the WTA Tour as a neutral athlete. This status was due to the ban on Russian and Belarusian players competing under their national flags following the geopolitical tensions stemming from Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Kasatkina's career highlights include reaching the finals of the 2018 Indian Wells Open, winning the 2021 Billie Jean King Cup (formerly known as the Federation Cup), and reaching the semifinals of the 2022 French Open. Her highest ranking so far has been World No. 8.
With her switch to Australian representation, Kasatkina joins a select group of former Russian players who have chosen to represent Australia, such as Arina Rodionova and Daria Saville. Her new status as the Australian No. 1 is a testament to her standing in the tennis world.
