Rutger published: Dame Kelly Holmes on How Covid Influenced Her Public Coming Out

Amazing Olympic athlete Dame Kelly Holmes has opened up about how getting COVID-19 became a turning point in her life, inspiring her public journey as a proud lesbian. In a heartfelt chat on BBC's LGBT Sport Podcast, at 55 years old, she shares her personal struggles and how she finally decided it was time.

Looking back on a hidden past

As an Olympic champion, Holmes shared her inspiring tale with host and former boxer Nicola Adams. During their talk, she spoke about a significant moment in 1988. That's when she first realized she was gay, after a fellow female soldier kissed her while she was in military service.

But that realization came with fear. Back then, LGBTQ+ individuals were banned from serving in any military capacity, a rule in place until 2000. So, Holmes kept quiet, shielding her truth even as she achieved great athletic success.

The pandemic's push

Then came COVID-19. Life changed as we all knew it, and it proved pivotal. Holmes told Nicola that getting sick with COVID was "quite traumatic." It triggered deep reflection and led her down a path she couldn't ignore any longer.

"COVID made me realize I didn't want this anymore," she admitted. The thought that she might leave this Earth without ever truly living as herself was too much. This epiphany led her, finally, towards professional help from a psychologist, dramatically altering her path toward acceptance.

Holmes shared, "I needed a place where I could voice why I couldn't come out," highlighting military restrictions as a key factor. "People didn't realize how much that shaped my silence."

Welcoming authenticity

After coming out in June 2022, Holmes says she feels "happy, really, truly happy, maybe even first-time happy." It's transformed her, and her story perfectly illustrates why living authentically matters so much.

By 2023, she was out and about with her girlfriend, Louise Cullen, at events like Europe Diversity Awards. This was a big moment in her ongoing journey. She calls Louise, a sports massage therapist from Northern Ireland, a true find, saying she feels she's finally "found her one."

Sparking courage in others

Dame Kelly Holmes' journey lights a path with hope and resilience. Her choice—coming out despite all odds—encourages those dealing with similar challenges and fears.

Through her openness, Holmes hopes people will better learn from each other, not just within LGBTQ+ circles but everywhere. Her story reminds us all about standing together.

Holmes says, "I want people out there who've been hiding, like me, too long, that it's never too late." Her words help many embrace their truth and work toward self-acceptance.

Let's keep this conversation going in a warm, respectful space in comments below. Foster positivity and support, and share your thoughts!
