Rutger published: Dallas Church Takes Stand Against Removal of Rainbow Crosswalks

There's a powerful statement unfolding at a Methodist church in Dallas, presenting a bold act in response when Texas Governor Greg Abbott ordered a Pride-themed crosswalk removed from in front Oak Lawn United Methodist Church. In an act rich with meaning and defiance, church leaders have chosen not silence nor acquiescence but something much more colorful: painting their church steps in vibrant rainbow hues. This artistic stand speaks volumes against Abbott's directive, standing shoulder-to-shoulder in solidarity with Dallas's LGBTQ+ community.

Silence isn't an option, say church leaders

"Silence, especially in times like these, betrays our values," insists Senior Pastor Rachel Griffin-Allison. "When injustice knocks, staying quiet sides with those causing harm." By transforming their steps, they've woven a visual tapestry showcasing their beliefs: that every soul, made in God's own image, deserves safety, respect, and a welcoming place in this community.

For Oak Lawn UMC, these rainbow steps shine as beacons—offering hope and connection not just within their walls, but as a message rippling through Dallas. "Rainbows remind us that God's presence abounds, especially with those pushed away by society," church leaders reflect.

Governor's order ignites a statewide response

Not long ago, Governor Abbott tasked Texas's Department Transportation with eradicating rainbow crosswalks throughout Texas. This followed July's instruction from U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, who aimed clearing political symbols from public spaces.

"Texans deserve their tax dollars used wisely, not blown on political charades," stated Governor Abbott on October 8. The removals kicked off soon after, stirring reactions statewide.

In Houston, tensions surfaced when four protesters were detained while trying block a rainbow crosswalk's removal. Charged with obstruction, their defiance became part larger protest wave across Houston, as residents chalked rainbow designs as acts defiance.

Dallas comes together against orders

In Dallas, city council members didn't hold back their disapproval Governor's orders. "The directive's questionable and unsupported," commented councilmember Paul Ridley. "It's nothing short political bullying," echoed Adam Bazaldua.

"A rainbow isn't political," Bazaldua argued. "It universally symbolizes inclusion, hope, and celebrates diversity."

On a recent Saturday, at rainbow intersections across Dallas, crowds gathered, challenging these removal orders. Over 150 people rallied at crosswalk near Legacy Love Monument, also site Oak Lawn UMC.

Support from community fuels ongoing efforts

Resource Center CEO Cece Cox voiced unwavering support: "These expressions free speech and cultural identity shouldn't be erased." Painting their steps will span about two weeks, says congregant Robert Garcia Sr. Volunteers from church will apply vibrant coats using rainbow and transgender flag colors, topped with non-slip sealant.

Pastor Griffin-Allison clarified painting steps wasn't political but "pastoral." "When power seeks erase queer joy and inclusion, Church faces choice: retreat comfort or stand courageously. We choose courage," she asserted.

Oak Lawn United Methodist Church's courageous act delivers a loud-and-clear message — solidarity and hope live here, even amid challenging times.
