Rutger published: Dakarai Larriett: From False Arrest to Senate Campaign - A Journey of Advocacy and Change

Dakarai Larriett is not your conventional candidate for the U.S. Senate, especially hailing from Alabama. As a gay, Black 43-year-old entrepreneur and community activist, Larriett’s background is as diverse as it is compelling. He founded a pet aromatherapy business, studied dance at a progressive high school in Birmingham, advocates fiercely for trans rights in Alabama, and even considers his ghost sightings a gift.

A Unique Candidate

Larriett is a charismatic and attractive figure who has assembled a team of seasoned political veterans to aid his campaign for U.S. Senate. He believes in the possibility of a blue wave in 2026, which might give him a fighting chance against the likely Republican opponent, a staunch MAGA supporter.

However, Larriett’s campaign is also driven by personal experiences, particularly a traumatic incident he describes as a wrongful, homophobia-fueled arrest. This event has become a central motivational force in his political aspirations. During a conversation from his home office in Birmingham's Loft District, Larriett shared insights into his journey and vision for the future.

An Unlawful Arrest

In Michigan last year, Larriett was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. However, subsequent tests cleared him of any wrongdoing. He was subjected to humiliating treatment, including being forced to defecate in front of officers to prove he wasn’t hiding drugs. Larriett sued over this treatment, but the judge dismissed his case, citing that the officers were merely doing their jobs.

Larriett argues that what happened was a clear abuse of power, exacerbated by homophobia, as evidenced by derogatory comments from the officers involved. His case continues on appeal, with Larriett confident that justice will prevail.

Inspiration and Political Motivation

When asked about his motivation to enter politics, Larriett cites the inaction of leaders he once admired. He recounts multiple meetings with Michigan’s governor and attorney general, both of whom he felt failed to hold the police accountable. This perceived lack of accountability inspired Larriett to take matters into his own hands through a Senate campaign.

While the unlawful arrest spurred him into action, Larriett emphasizes that his candidacy is not single-issue. He is committed to being a voice for the people, with a focus on challenging the status quo and advocating for minorities who are often marginalized.

Embracing Identity in the Campaign

Initially, Larriett's team suggested downplaying his LGBTQ+ identity, given Alabama's political climate. However, Larriett chose transparency, believing it crucial to lead openly and authentically. This decision proved successful during a significant fundraising event when his “coming out” text message led to the campaign’s biggest day of donations.

While not prominently featured on his campaign website, Larriett’s blog discusses his identity openly. He believes that transparency and embracing one's true self are vital in politics, particularly against opponents who oppose LGBTQ+ rights.

Facing a Tough Opponent

If he wins the Democratic nomination, Larriett will likely face the current Alabama attorney general, a candidate known for controversial stances and actions. Larriett intends to challenge these by appealing to the state's values, emphasizing dignity, respect, and fairness for all, especially the trans community.

A Personal Journey

Growing up in a Jehovah’s Witness family while attending progressive schools, Larriett’s upbringing was a mix of traditional and liberal influences. He credits this dichotomy with helping him find acceptance and eventually come out as gay.

Larriett’s experiences, both personal and professional, have shaped his determination to serve. Although he is not seeking a partner post-divorce, he channels his energy into being a dedicated “dog dad” and a committed advocate for his community.

Looking Forward

Asked about his goals as a potential U.S. Senator, Larriett envisions a tenure focused on putting people first, investing in education, healthcare, and economic opportunity. His campaign is built on the belief that these are the issues most important to Alabamians.

Larriett’s journey from a traumatic arrest to a Senate campaign underscores his commitment to advocacy and change. With a diverse background and a passion for justice, he aims to bring a new voice to Alabama’s political landscape.
