Every year on December 1st, World AIDS Day rolls around, bringing with it a host a meaningful events throughout D.C. The aim? To raise awareness and honor those affected by HIV/AIDS. Launched by WHO back in 1988, this day stands as a key moment in educating people worldwide about this ongoing epidemic and joining together in a united fight against HIV. The theme set out globally as we look ahead, "Overcoming Disruption, Transforming AIDS Response," calls us all towards action and meaningful change.
In D.C., you don't want miss out on a major event at Martin Luther King, Jr. Library, slated from noon until 9 p.m. on December 1st. Put together by DC Health, this event promises live performances, free grub, and free HIV testing. It doesn't stop there, though! You'll also find a ton resources from DC Health and its partners like DC Public Library, DC Health Link, Serve DC, and even representation from Mayor's Office LGBTQ Affairs.
Looking another impactful gathering? The Lily and Earle M. Pilgrim Art Foundation, alongside Visual AIDS out in New York, are inviting everyone out a film screening on December 1 at David Bethuel Jamieson Studio House Walbridge, Mount Pleasant. They're showing "Meet Us Where We're At," an hour-long film collection by artists from around globe, focusing on drug use and HIV epidemic. Afterward, stick around some good eats at a potluck and thoughtful discussion led by Peter Stebbins from 6-8 p.m.
Over at Cathedral St. Matthew Apostle, there'll be Mass at 5:30 p.m. followed a peaceful candlelight prayer vigil at 6 p.m. This welcoming event's open everyone and finishes with a reception at 6:30 p.m.
The very day after, Capital Jewish Museum's hosting speaker series on December 2 from 6:30-8 p.m. centered on Jewish community's response HIV/AIDS. They're bringing in big names like LGBTQ psychiatrist Jeffrey Akman, physician assistant Barbara Lewis, and Larry Neff, who's leading services at Bet Mishpacah, LGBTQ synagogue. Heather Alt from Whitman-Walker Health's moderating. Museum members can head in free, others need $10 ticket, or maybe opt $18 Chai ticket which keeps all subsidized. Plus, you get peek at exhibit "LGBT Jews Federal City," sticking around until January 4, 2026.
In Virginia, Alexandria's Mayor, Alyia Gaskins, will be attending World AIDS Day event at Lee Center from 6:30-8:30 p.m. It promises local music, choirs, and heaps educational content—all at no cost community.
Maryland's ramping up too! Frederick Center's got something planned November 30 from 1-4 p.m. with talks, tables, and a raffle. Frederick County Health Department's offering free HIV testing during event, plus walk-in testing continues every Tuesday and Friday from 9 a.m. 3 p.m.
On December 6, over in Prince George's County, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority's alumni chapter hosting community awareness day at Suitland Community Center, Forestville. Between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., you can get free, confidential HIV testing, chat with medical pros, and join health workshops. Breakfast and snacks are being tossed in, too.
