Celebrating diversity and creativity at D.C.'s drag awards

The D.C. Drag Awards lit up Trade Bar with vibrant energy, electrifying performances, and an unmissable sense that everyone was partaking in something special. Held in Washington's lively Logan Circle neighborhood, this annual event has grown over three years, becoming a beacon that celebrates creativity, resilience, and, most importantly, unapologetic self-expression within our LGBTQ+ community. Attendees were treated not only with dazzling looks but also with an immense feeling that this was more than a show - it was a celebration that united all present.

A night gone wild at this year's drag awards

"Welcome To The Jungle; Show Us Your Wild Side" was this year's theme, and boy, did they deliver. Hosts Cake Pop!, Crystal Edge, and Evry Pleasure slayed in their wild, animal-inspired outfits. As if their fierce looks weren't enough, guests from all over DC, Maryland, and Virginia brought their A-game, donning everything from leopard prints and sequins that shimmered, proving once again that creativity knows no bounds.

Recognizing excellence in D.C.'s drag scene

With a whopping 26 categories, these awards celebrated every corner and crevice that makes up D.C.'s colorful drag and queer nightlife. Categories like Best Hair, DJ Of The Year, and Best Party were just a few highlights that showcased an incredible range and depth. This wasn't just a night full with laughter and support; it was an echoing testament filled with love and pride that resonated deeply within our LGBTQ+ community.

Unforgettable wins and heartfelt speeches

One standout? Easily Friedá Poussáy, who snagged Comedy Performer Of The Year. Clothed in a stunning cheetah-print gown with roses blossoming all around, Friedá captured everyone's hearts with her infectious excitement. "I feel phenomenal tonight. It took me about seven and a half days just getting this look right," she shared, and you could feel her joy just radiating.

Equally unforgettable was Tara Hoot, doubling her victories with Community Changemaker and Social Media Star. Known as both an activist and true drag scene force, Tara looked back on her journey stating, "Thanks, everyone, watching a 50-year-old man in a wig who started drag during COVID... You do what you can on social media. I love you all." It was a tough act not getting emotional!

The night also belonged largely in part due by Mari Con Carne, crowned Drag Queen Of The Year, whose strong political message had heads nodding and eyes widening. Boldly declaring activism's power, Mari said, "You can be political and an activist while succeeding. I stand proud as a Brown, Latina, immigrant drag queen," urging everyone in attendance never underestimate contributions from immigrants or people-of-color.

Continuing further Mari delved deeply in issues like Middle East conflicts and U.S. authoritarianism rise—advocating always that marginalized voices deserve hearing and defending.

Empowering through drag

Drag performer Citrine nailed it when describing why drag matters. "Drag's a powerful tool," she said. "It lets you express yourself in ways you wouldn't otherwise. It gives you courage. So, be unapologetically yourself—whether or not you put on makeup."
