On a vibrant and sunny Thursday, May 29, the heart of Washington, D.C. came alive with pride and celebration as nearly 200 community members gathered to witness a significant event. D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, along with members of the D.C. Council and representatives from the Capital Pride Alliance, came together to hoist a large and colorful Pride flag high above the John Wilson D.C. City Hall building. This event marked the city’s official welcoming ceremony for hosting WorldPride 2025 in the nation’s capital.
The event, set against the backdrop of the historic Wilson Building, was a testament to the city’s enduring commitment to the LGBTQ+ community. Mayor Bowser, speaking passionately from a podium on the building’s front steps, addressed the enthusiastic crowd, "Happy WorldPride in the gayest city in America," she proclaimed, a statement met with resounding cheers and applause from the attendees.
The significance of this event was underscored by the presence of five members of the D.C. Council, including Zachary Parker (D-Ward 5), the Council’s openly gay member. Each Council member expressed solidarity and support during their speeches, highlighting their commitment to LGBTQ+ rights and the city’s role as a beacon of hope and inclusion.
Ryan Bos, the executive director of Capital Pride Alliance, and June Crenshaw, the deputy director, took to the podium to convey the importance of the occasion. "This flag tells a story of love without apology," Crenshaw declared, evoking a sense of unity and strength. "Our community has never backed down, and we will not at this time of challenge," she asserted, inspiring the gathered crowd.
Japer Bowles, the director of the Mayor’s Office of LGBTQ Affairs, emphasized the pride that the city, under the leadership of Mayor Bowser, takes in hosting WorldPride, particularly as it coincides with the 50th anniversary of Pride celebrations in D.C. This event was not only a celebration but also a reminder of the progress made and the work still to be done in advancing LGBTQ+ rights.
The ceremony was graced by the presence of Deacon Maccubbin, a trailblazer in the D.C. gay rights movement, who organized the city’s first Gay Pride Day in 1975. Sitting in the front row with his husband Jim Bennett, Maccubbin’s presence was a poignant reminder of the history and legacy of activism in D.C.
During the event, Mayor Bowser presented a mayoral proclamation to Capital Pride Alliance officials, declaring May 29, 2025, as "A Day of Remembrance For Bernie Delia in Washington, D.C." Delia, a respected and dedicated member of the Capital Pride Alliance, played a crucial role in organizing WorldPride 2025 before his unexpected passing in June 2024. This gesture honored his contributions and the impact he had on the community.
As the speeches concluded, the moment everyone awaited arrived. Mayor Bowser, joined by Council members, Capital Pride officials, and members of the LGBTQ+ community, stepped forward to raise the large Pride flag. With a sense of unity and pride, the flag was raised on a pole situated to the right of the Wilson Building’s grand entrance, symbolizing the city’s unwavering support for its LGBTQ+ residents.
