At an inspiring fundraising event titled ‘Cocktails for a Cause’ held on January 29, the organizers of Washington D.C.'s annual LGBTQ Black Pride celebration unveiled the theme for their 2025 festivities: “Black Pride is Freedom.” This powerful declaration is set to guide the upcoming celebration, which will take place over the Memorial Day weekend from May 23-26. What makes this year's event even more special is its status as an official part of World Pride, which D.C. proudly hosts this year.
The theme announcement event, held at the elegant City Club of D.C., drew a crowd of over 100 enthusiastic attendees. The club generously offered its cocktail lounge space free of charge and even pledged a portion of the evening's drink sales to support the Black Pride celebration. Kenya Hutton, who spearheads the Center for Black Equity as its CEO and President, shared insights into the theme selection process. Hutton explained that the choice of “Black Pride is Freedom” was a response to the pressing issues confronting the LGBTQ community in 2025.
“Given the current state of the world, where our safe spaces are increasingly under threat, it's crucial for us to assert our freedom and dignity,” Hutton remarked during his speech. He emphasized the ongoing challenges faced by the Black LGBTQ community, particularly the transgender community, and stressed that the theme serves as a bold declaration of resilience and visibility.
“We are making a statement that we will continue to embrace our freedom,” Hutton stated emphatically. “We will love openly, live authentically, and express ourselves without fear. Our resolve is to remain visible and proud, refusing to retreat into the shadows. We are here to live freely and unapologetically.”
As in previous years, most events during Black Pride will be hosted at the Capital Hilton Hotel. These events will encompass a variety of engaging activities, including panel discussions, workshops, and social gatherings, designed to foster community building and offer educational opportunities for attendees.
Aligning with the broader World Pride festivities, the Capital Pride Alliance, D.C.'s main organizer for LGBTQ Pride events, has announced an exciting lineup of events scheduled from May 17 through June 8. Notably, D.C. Trans Pride will kick off the celebrations on May 17-18, leading into the highly anticipated Black Pride weekend from May 23-26.
