Cynthia Nixon Advocates for Transgender Rights at New York Rally
Famed actress Cynthia Nixon, known for her role in the beloved show "Sex and the City," delivered a heartfelt speech at a rally in New York, lauding her "beautiful and brave" transgender son and nephew. Her words came in response to reports that a prominent hospital in the state had ceased providing gender-affirming treatments.
Nixon expressed her dismay upon learning that New York University Langone Health allegedly began canceling appointments for transgender youths. According to reports, the hospital had rescinded appointments for two 12-year-old patients who were scheduled to receive puberty blockers.
This troubling development coincided with threats from former President Donald Trump, who had announced plans to withhold federal funding from hospitals offering gender-affirming care to minors. Although the order had not been legally enacted, several hospitals had already begun canceling appointments in anticipation.
At the rally held in St. Vartan Park, which is situated near NYU Langone, Nixon expressed her sorrow over the distress caused by Trump's looming threat. "I am here today as the mother of a proud trans man," she began, addressing the hundreds of attendees who gathered to show their support.
"I am here today as the aunt of a proud trans man," she continued. "My best friend's kid is trans, and my kid's best friend is trans. My wife and I, our lives are enriched by the most amazing, beautiful, brave trans people – young and old, but especially young."
Nixon's son, Samuel, had publicly come out as a transgender man in 2018. The Emmy Award-winning actress shared that Samuel had undergone top surgery at NYU Langone "a number of years ago," and praised the excellent care they received from the medical team.
"His doctors were fantastic… His surgeon was the best we could have imagined," Nixon recalled warmly. "The thought that this city is filled with young people who believed they had a safe haven where they could receive top-tier care, and now that place is inaccessible, is deeply upsetting to me."
She condemned Trump's "assault" on the LGBTQ+ community since his inauguration and vowed to continue advocating for trans rights. "The last two weeks have been an assault, a barrage, so many horrific things coming at us from every direction," she observed.
Nixon shared her experience on Instagram, encouraging NYU Langone to "be better than this." She recounted how the rally, organized in less than 36 hours, was attended by hundreds of passionate supporters demanding that NYU Langone and other private hospitals resist Trump's "illegal and inhumane" executive order.
"New York is better than this, NYU SHOULD be better than this," she asserted, urging the hospital to uphold its commitment to providing essential care to transgender youth.
As the rally drew to a close, Nixon took a moment to reflect on the power of community and solidarity. "Nothing has made me feel so good as coming around the corner today and seeing you all standing here fighting for trans rights," she declared, receiving a resounding cheer from the crowd.
Many families of transgender teens have initiated legal action against Trump's proposed restrictions, seeking to protect access to vital gender-affirming care. Nixon's impassioned plea echoed the sentiments of countless advocates who are determined to safeguard the rights and dignity of transgender individuals.
