Cynthia Nixon Advocates for Trans Rights at New York Rally

Renowned actress Cynthia Nixon, famous for her role in "Sex and the City," took a powerful stand at a rally in New York to honor her "beautiful and brave" transgender son and nephew. The protest was in response to reports that a local hospital had canceled gender-affirming treatments.

Speaking at the rally, Nixon expressed her deep disappointment upon learning that New York University Langone Health had allegedly started canceling appointments for transgender youth. According to reports, these cancellations affected two 12-year-olds who were scheduled to receive puberty blockers.

The cancellations seem to have been influenced by former President Donald Trump's threats to withdraw federal funding from medical institutions that provide gender-affirming care to individuals under 19. Despite the fact that this order has not been officially enacted, several hospitals have preemptively canceled these critical appointments.

The legal community, including transgender teens and their families, has already begun challenging Trump's move to limit access to gender-affirming care. This response highlights the ongoing battle for transgender rights.

Nixon, known for her activism, appeared at a protest in St. Vartan Park, close to NYU Langone, to address the emotional toll of these developments. She shared her personal connection to the issue by discussing the trans individuals in her life, including her child, her sister's child, her child's best friend, and her best friend's child.

"Most importantly, I am here today as the mother of a proud trans man," Nixon declared to the hundreds gathered at the park, who responded with cheers and applause. She continued, "I am here today as the aunt of a proud trans man. My best friend's kid is trans and my kid's best friend is trans."

She went on to emphasize the impact of transgender individuals in her life: "My wife and I, our lives are filled with the most amazing, beautiful, brave trans people – young and old, but especially young." Nixon’s first-born child, Samuel, came out as a trans man in 2018, and she shared that he had successfully undergone top surgery at NYU Langone.

"His doctors were fantastic," she recalled. "His surgeon was the best we could've imagined. And the idea that this city is filled with young people who thought they had a place to go where they can receive the highest care – and that place has now been shut to them, sickens me. Sickens me to my core."

Nixon did not hold back in her criticism of Trump’s "assault" on the LGBTQ+ community since his time in office, and she vowed to continue her advocacy.

"The last two weeks have been an assault, a barrage, so many horrific things coming at us from every direction," she lamented.

On her Instagram, Nixon shared her experiences at the rally. She encouraged NYU Langone to "be better than this."

"Last night I spoke at a rally attended by hundreds of people – organized in less than 36 hours – to demand that NYU Langone and other private hospitals stop being preemptively subservient to Trump’s illegal and inhumane executive order denying trans youth critical care," she wrote.

She concluded with a call to action: "New York is better than this, NYU SHOULD be better than this."

We encourage you to share your thoughts below. Please remember to keep the discourse respectful as we continue to fight for trans rights together.
