Rutger published: Crumbl Cookies Co-Founder Sawyer Hemsley Embraces His Authentic Self, Shares Journey of Acceptance

Sawyer Hemsley, co-founder behind Crumbl Cookies, recently made a heartfelt announcement—he's come out as gay. This brave revelation followed some online chatter about his personal life, and Sawyer decided it was time he took control and shared his story in his own words.

The rise and rise (and rise)of Crumbl Cookies

Sawyer and his partner-in-crime, Jason McGowan, rolled out Crumbl Cookies back in 2017, and let's just say, it's been a whirlwind. Fast forward a few years, and they've got over 1,000 stores across not just America, but also Puerto Rico and Canada. Folks can't get enough, not just because their cookies are downright delicious, but they're also hobnobbing with celebs like Olivia Rodrigo and The Jonas Brothers. As Crumbl's Chief Branding Officer, Sawyer's been a key player in crafting its unique voice and steering its wild success. But even amidst all this, he was tackling some tough personal stuff, embracing who he truly was.

Owning his story

On August 25th, Sawyer took a leap and shared a candid post on Instagram. He addressed all that speculation about who he was. "Over recent times, there've been folks online trying their best at defining me—and not always kindly," he wrote. "But I'm taking back my story, and it's time I tell it myself."

After much reflection, Sawyer found clarity, realizing and accepting his identity as a gay man. "It took a long time—sorting through my own feelings and finding comfort in speaking up," he confessed. Although not an easy road, it's brought him a sense that things finally make sense.

Finding peace with his past

In his heartfelt message, Sawyer touched upon his Mormon roots in Southeastern Idaho, which added layers and complexity. "I grew up with beliefs and values that I still deeply respect, but navigating my path was a bit more intricate because," he shared. Despite those hurdles, he cherishes his upbringing, acknowledging how it's helped shape him.

He mentioned, "Some might wonder or judge, but my hope? That kindness and understanding will lead." Through it all, he's discovered resilience, compassion, and, above all, what it means, truly, authentically, himself.

With a grateful heart, he shared his thanks—for all life's opportunities, support, and most importantly, living his truth. "This journey, filled with growth and honesty, It's a ride I'll always be thankful I embarked on," he concluded.

Facing tomorrow head-on

Sawyer's embracing his future with courage and sincerity. His story shines as a beacon, lighting up paths others might be treading toward self-acceptance and truth.
