The Trevor Project, a leading organization dedicated to preventing suicide among LGBTQ+ youth, reported a significant uptick in demand for their crisis intervention services on the day of President Donald Trump’s inauguration. Specifically, the organization saw a 33% increase in crisis calls, a stark indicator of the emotional and psychological impact political actions can have on marginalized communities.
On his first day in office, President Trump signed an executive order that effectively halted the federal recognition of transgender individuals, reversing several civil rights initiatives put in place by previous administrations. This abrupt policy change was a catalyst for increased anxiety and distress among LGBTQ+ youth, leading many to seek help.
Jaymes Black, CEO of The Trevor Project, highlighted the troubling trend in a public statement. "The political targeting of LGBTQ+ youth — particularly those who are transgender and nonbinary — must stop," Black urged. "Our data showed a 700% increase in outreach on our lines following Election Day in November, and the 33% spike we saw recently underscores the urgent need for positive action by lawmakers and the media to support young people's mental health and safety."
Black continued, "Regardless of political beliefs, it's imperative that we recognize the real threats to young people's lives and take immediate steps to provide robust support for LGBTQ+ youth."
The Trevor Project was not alone in witnessing a dramatic rise in crisis calls. The Rainbow Youth Project USA Foundation reported over 1,400 calls to their hotline by early Monday afternoon following Trump's inauguration. Before the election, their monthly call volume was approximately 3,765.
These organizations serve as crucial lifelines for LGBTQ+ youth facing challenges such as bullying, social stigmatization, and systemic discrimination. Kristen Johnston, a case manager and crisis team leader at the Rainbow Youth Project, noted the alarming rise in calls as a call to action. "The data is troubling and highlights the necessity for advocacy, community support, and rapid intervention to safeguard our youth," Johnston stated.
In the wake of his inauguration, President Trump rescinded several protections for LGBTQ+ individuals, including an executive order by former President Joe Biden aimed at protecting LGBTQ+ children in foster care. These new policies prohibited transgender individuals from accessing facilities and services that align with their gender identity and prevented changes to gender markers on federally issued identification.
Moreover, Trump’s administration openly discussed plans to restrict access to gender-affirming care for youth and ban transgender individuals from military service. Such measures contribute to a climate of fear and uncertainty for LGBTQ+ communities.
A recent 2023 survey conducted by The Trevor Project revealed that anti-LGBTQ+ legislation has exacerbated anxiety and suicidal thoughts among 66% of queer youth surveyed. However, the survey also highlighted that those with access to affirming environments, such as supportive homes, schools, community events, and online spaces, reported lower levels of mental distress.
