Creating a safe haven: A retirement home dedicated entirely queer seniors

Vicente Llorente, now 71, has experienced a life filled with both joy and hardship. Growing up in Madrid under Franco's oppressive regime, he was raised by his single mom alongside his four siblings. From a young age, Llorente knew he was different. While he played with girls, he felt an undeniable attraction towards boys. His brothers couldn't grasp this difference, forcing him out on his own at just 17. He found a job at a hotel, but his life took an unexpected turn when his employers discovered he was gay. Suddenly job-less, Llorente turned reluctantly turned towards sex work just so he could survive. During this time, he was arrested by undercover cops due solely because he was gay and suffered terrible abuse while in prison. When he got out, he had nothing. With no home or family support, a Christian charity stepped in, offering him temporary refuge and helping him secure work in a bar. But financial stability kept slipping through his fingers, and he often had no choice but return sex work.

Queer aging: Financial struggles and resilience

Today, like many in his generation, Llorente faces aging with limited means. His pension, a mere €400 a month, makes life in Madrid nearly unmanageable. Despite Spain's progressive stance on LGBTQ+ rights, many queer elders bear lasting scars from past discrimination. Research shows LGBTQ+ people are more vulnerable poverty than their heterosexual peers.

Federico Armenteros' vision

Federico Armenteros, a passionate activist, saw these hardships. Initially focused on sexual education, Armenteros redirected his efforts towards elderly LGBTQ+ individuals after a colleague pointed out ageism within their own community. He began connecting with older gay men, hearing their fears about dependency and isolation in traditional nursing homes.

The 26th December Foundation's inception

To address these challenges, Armenteros founded The 26th December Foundation in 2010, a nod towards when Spain repealed anti-homosexuality laws. The foundation aims supports queer elders in poverty by offering shelter and community. Thanks this, Llorente now shares a home with two other queer seniors, finding comfort and companionship.
