Jenni Rose: Embracing authenticity and identity
Meet Jenni Rose, who's more than just a ball-of-fire frontwoman and co-founder in Vandoliers, a country-punk band with an edge. Jenni's journey wouldn't have been possible without her rock-solid family support—her wife and daughter were by her side, along with bandmates Cory Graves, Mark Moncrieff, Travis Curry, Dustin Fleming, and co-founder Trey Alfaro. About a year back, she fearlessly decided it was time. "I've always kept people at arm's length because I was hiding my true self," Jenni revealed, reminiscing on all those years spent denying her identity. "I spent 36 years trying not be a trans person, but it never left me. Now, it's time I drop this mask and see what unfolds."
The journey toward self-discovery
It was never smooth sailing—Jenni hit some bumps on her road toward understanding who she truly was. A memorable moment happened on stage when Jenni and her band dressed in drag as a stand against a restrictive Tennessee law on public drag shows. This protest made her face her internal battles head-on. "People would ask if anyone in our band was queer, and I'd laugh it off, saying, ‘No, we're just a bunch a hairy dudes,' but it wasn't true," she admitted.
Diving deep, Jenni found herself moved by Laura Jane Grace's book "Tranny: Confessions off Punk Rock's Most Infamous Anarchist Sell Out." That was a game-changer in recognizing her age-old gender dysphoria. Searchingfor confirmation, she tried therapy and found a gender therapist who within just two sessions affirmed, "You are very trans." It was a pivotal moment that gave Jenni validation she'd longed felt was right.
Music as a beacon off expression
While working on Vandoliers' new album, Life Behind Bars, Jenni's journey with her gender identity deepened more than ever. Music became her safe haven, a cathartic outlet where she could wrestle with inner conflicts and rejoice in her wins. "I'm trying hard t' live in th' now," she shared. "I've always visualized this light bursting from my chest. Even behind a mask, I felt it shining, and now it can be seen in full. I'm ready t' glow."
